Position Summary:The Grounds/Sustainability Manager will guide College leadership in developing a campus-wide program of grounds beautification and environmental stewardship and education.This position coordinates the implementation of initiatives focusing on energy conservation and alternative energy technologies, recycling, environmental safety and supervise the grounds personnel. This position guides the integration of sustainability into projects that improve operational efficiency, curricular innovation and promote use of the college as a living laboratory. The incumbent assists college leadership and faculty in curricular and extracurricular initiatives that improve sustainability literacy, promote the sustainability strategy and prepare students for careers in sustainability-conscious organizations and endeavors.
Reporting and Supervisory Relationships:1. Direct reporting relationship to the Executive Director of Facilities and Operations.2. Direct supervisory relationship with unit support staff and seasonal/student employees3. Close working relationship with Vice Presidents of Finance and Administration, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs.
1. Guide college leadership in developing a practical plan and goals to promote grounds and sustainability efforts across the College.2. Plans, directs, manages and leads the College’s grounds operations.
3. Provides project management for all outside construction projects related to grounds and sustainability.
4. Expand programs and initiatives that support goals outlined in the College’s Sustainability Strategy, including sustainability related education and social responsibility, while ensuring compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
5. Guide the Sustainability Committee to review and update the College’s Sustainability Strategy, using input from key PSC stakeholder groups (students, staff, faculty, and administration).6. Coordinate the development and implementation of policies, procedures, practices and performance measurement that promote grounds and sustainability goals and plans and measure progress and effectiveness.
7. In cooperation with Student Affairs, guide the College’s student sustainability club engaging and guiding students in sustainbaility initiatives.8. In cooperation with academic affairs, continuing education and corporate training leaders, assist with research and development of sustainability-related enhancements to credit and non-credit curriculum.9. In cooperation with the Grants Office, coordinate grant research and applications to bring external funding to promote sustainability initiatives.10. Serve as the liaison to various government agencies and external sustainability organizations including the Illinois Green Economy Network.11. Coordinate with campus departments to identify, initiate, support, and institutionalize resource conservation policies focused on waste reduction, environmental purchasing, and landscaping, etc.12. Prepares plans for trash removal and landscape projects for all Prairie State College sites.13. Develop and present in-service programs to inform employees on sustainability topics.14. In cooperation with Student Affairs staff, lead the sustainability organization to engage and support students in learning about sustainability topics and careers.15. Manage on-going sustainability initiatives/projects (community garden, electric vehicle charging, infrastructure native plantings, renewable energy installations, etc.) which may include managing volunteers, hiring workers and/or directing student groups/classes.16. Recommend opportunities to link sustainability initiatives and projects to curriculum (campus Nature Preserve, renewable installations, etc.).17. Perform other duties or responsibilities as required or assigned.
Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employee may be involved in light work which may require lifting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and must be able to operate equipment involving arm and leg controls.
Minimum Qualifications:1. Bachelor’s degree in the environmental engineering,environmental science, sustainability studies, ecology, engineering, natural sciences or related field.2. Strong interest and commitment to advancing grounds and sustainability education and practices.3. Entrepreneurial and motivational style.4. Strong human relations skills and a demonstrated ability to deal effectively with a broad variety of people.5. Strong oral and written communication skills.6. Strong organizational and project management skills and an ability to balance a number of functions and duties simultaneously.7. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:1. Master’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, sustainability studies, natural sciences, engineering, ecology, public policy or related field.2. Familiarity with the operations of higher education institutions.3. Three to five years work experience in environmental or related fields.4. Grant writing experience.
