As the oldest medical school in the western United States, the Stanford School of Medicine is devoted to training tomorrow's leading physicians and scientists, conducting cutting-edge biomedical research, and creating new ways to prevent and treat disease across the world. The Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI) is one of only 51 National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country and is a prominent, dynamic, and complex institute within the Stanford University School of Medicine. The SCI actively works to build synergies and collaborations among faculty with cancer-relevant expertise from four Schools and over 30 departments across Stanford University.

Situated in the highly dynamic research environment in SCI, the Gray Laboratory is seeking a Senior Research Scientist to plan, establish, and maintain cutting edge mass spectrometry capabilities at Stanford. The successful candidate will establish a chemical proteomics sub-group in the Gray laboratory and will implement sophisticated proteomics experiments in collaboration with Gray laboratory members and with other groups at SCI and other institutions. The successful candidate will set up and maintain a modern mass spectrometry instrument and associated materials/instruments. Mass spectrometry is a nexus of discovery for the laboratory, and the candidate will play a crucial role in major developments in the discovery of novel chemotherapeutics. The role is highly collaborative with opportunities for independent work that will contribute new capabilities to long-term efforts in the laboratory. The Gray laboratory, along with SCI, will provide the necessary staffing and instrumentation for this work.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, or other relevant field
  • Five years relevant post-Ph.D. experience and a strong publication record
  • Expertise and demonstrated experience in proteomics and peptide mass spectrometry, including
  • method development, algorithm optimization, data analysis, and diverse biological applications
  • Expertise in HPLC and mass spectrometry instrumentation
  • Command of computational pipelines for peptide mass spectrometry
  • Strong management and organizational skills
  • Excellent problem solving, written and oral communication skills


DESIRED:
  • Previous chemical biology laboratory experience
  • Fluency in multiple programming languages (Python, R, Bash)
  • Basic systems administration skills (NFS, database management, intranet connectivity and security)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plan experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.
  • Independently oversee and conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures.
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.
  • Contribute to publication of findings. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with mass spectrometry facility maintenance as needed; maintain instrumentation, related consumables stocks, scheduling calendar.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques.
