University Communications, part of the Office of External Relations, provides support and campus leadership in the planning, coordination and implementation of strategic communications programs that support Stanford University and its mission. University Communications is responsible for brand positioning and strategy; issues and reputation management; crisis communications; oversight of digital content and top-level web and social media platforms; media relations and news services; executive communications with all constituencies; major publications; and a campus video productions studio and video production group. University Communications coordinates with communications professionals across the university and advises on communications policy with senior executive staff.



Position summary:

Stanford's Office of University Communications is looking for a Social Media Manager to develop and execute communications strategies and tactics on Stanford's flagship accounts on Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and YouTube (5.8M combined followers), and other digital channels. The Social Media Manager will produce original and compelling storytelling that illustrates and supports the university's mission and vision and optimize the delivery of this content to wide range of internal and external audience segments. The Social Media Manager will report to the Associate Director, Digital Strategy, and sit in a 17-FTE digital strategy team that promotes and elevates the teaching and research mission of Stanford University.

A hybrid work arrangement is preferred for this role but would consider remote work for the right candidate. Working hours will be established in the Pacific Time zone.

In this role you will:


  • Participate in the development and execution of key messages and strategies for delivering original content that communicates Stanford's strategic priorities to multiple discrete audiences across Stanford's digital channels, with a focus on social media.
  • Execute day-to-day content creation, publishing, and account maintenance on Stanford's flagship social media channels
  • Contribute to devising and implementing creative and compelling strategies and tactics, grounded in informed experimentation and analytic evidence, to communicate the innovations, employee experience, academic excellence, and essential nature of the university, primarily through existing and emerging social media platforms.
  • Monitor online conversation and trends and identify opportunities for Stanford to advance its messaging objectives
  • Collaborate and coordinate with communicators in University Communications and other offices to ensure consistent messaging products and to maximize performance
  • Advise students, staff, and faculty on social media best practices, and assist in maintaining compliance with Stanford's policies
  • Execute and optimize paid social media campaigns
  • Assist in the production of visual media, working with an in-house creative team and with a range of stakeholders and subjects across campus (student groups, faculty, staff, communicators, administrators, etc.)
  • Engage with audiences and stakeholders to spur advocacy and broaden the reach and impact of Stanford's messaging
  • Evaluate and manage a suite of services, tools and platforms that facilitate creative production and account management and security
  • Liase with social media platforms and vendors to resolve technical issues, assist campus communicators with technical support
  • Participate in issue-response communications and monitoring in collaboration with the Insights & Analytics team
  • May hire, coach, and manage interns and freelancers


To be successful in this role, you will bring:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Three years of experience in social media management or digital communications, marketing or journalism preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of social platforms, and current and anticipated digital communication trends
  • Experience with industry-standard tools used to conduct and support social media management; knowledge of Khoros a plus
  • Basic knowledge of photo and video editing, to the extent required for intelligent management of visual assets
  • Experience with growth marketing strategies (A/B testing, etc.) that maximize reach and impact of content with target audiences
  • Hands-on experience with the administration of advertising and paid content promotion
  • Ability to leverage platform developments in support of communication goals
  • Demonstrated commitment to proactively solving problems and developing solutions
  • Experience contributing to high-functioning teams

  • An intuitive understanding of how to attract, grow and engage digital audiences through organic and paid social, third-party advocacy, and content partnerships
  • A drive to build and maintain relationships and find opportunities for partnership and collaboration
  • The ability to imagine and articulate how different channels might advance editorial strategies for a range of audience segments
  • Tendency toward curiosity, collaboration, persistence and problem solving
  • Demonstrated commitment to tracking industry trends and staying abreast of platform changes, big and little
  • Eagerness to analyze audience insights and prototype new creative and editorial approaches
  • The ability to problem-solve and work independently to meet deadlines and capitalize on creative opportunities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and diplomacy required to interact effectively with, and provide service to, manager, colleagues, and external stakeholders
  • Knowledge of Stanford's culture and traditions a strong plus
