Job Overview

The Carpet and Floor Care Specialist, working in accordance with a detail project plan, the incumbent performs specific cleaning and maintenance functions to provide a clean, safe environment. Areas of responsibility will include care of hard floors and tile surfaces, vacuuming carpets, carpet spotting to remove gum, paint, and other foreign matters, and carpet shampooing and extraction. They also perform other duties as assigned - including but not limited to snow and ice removal, spills and flooding, and/or water or fire damage and special event support.

Work Interactions

The Carpet and Floor Care Specialist reports to a Custodial Supervisor (may be one of four night supervisors, one of three Residential Custodial Supervisors, an Evening Custodial Supervisor, a Day Custodial Supervisor or a Weekend Custodial Supervisor), along with custodians. They work alone and as part of a team, and on occasion may receive assignments from the Manager of Custodial Services or the Night Operations Manager. Under certain circumstances, they perform tasks assigned by the Work Management Center, the Director of Facilities Management and other department managers. As well, they be requested to serve as team leader in the absence or unavailability of a supervisor.

The work of the Carpet and Floor Care Specialist constitutes a direct service of the department to ensure a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University community can live, learn and work. They represent the department with the University community and its visitors and is expected to behave in a professional manner, keep informed of departmental and University policies, regulations and guides pertaining to employment obligations, including complying with attendance and clock in and out on time, working with other University Facilities staff as part of a team, and being flexible with schedule to accommodate emergency situations, such as staffing shortages and snow removal.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or high school equivalency preferred
  • One year of custodial work experience and one year minimum floor care experience preferred
  • A valid and current driver's license from Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia
  • Basic knowledge of English, including the ability to read, write and speak English with understanding in order to read and understand product label instructions and University policies and procedures
  • Ability to clearly relate custodial and maintenance problems to supervisor and/or the Work Management Center


The successful candidate for Carpet and Floor Care Specialist will be required to complete a training program in building cleaning.

The Carpet and Floor Care Specialist is designated as an essential position, requiring incumbent to report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time, regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late, or closing early.
