Job Description Summary

Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Student Financial Aid, the Associate Director will

  • Serve as a member of the Student Financial Aid leadership team.
  • Direct and manage business processes and information systems within the Student Financial Aid (SFA) office
  • Work to capitalize on the use of technology to support and enhance SFA business functions and support and enhance the objectives of the University’s Enrollment Management Division
  • Serve as the primary administrator for the PowerFAIDS financial aid system to include release management, quality assurance, and testing.
  • Maintain all SFA systems in compliance with federal and state regulations, as well as University policies and procedures
  • Develop and maintain all internal and external data interfaces, data reporting, set-up, and maintenance of the PowerFAIDS financial aid management system.
  • Manage integrations and data interfaces for all financial aid systems with the student information system, admission CRM, and other software systems used across campus.
  • Serve as the Data Steward for SFA.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Registrar’s Office, Student Financial Services, Admissions offices, and others to develop and implement innovative solutions to meet students’ needs.
  • Evaluate business processes, make recommendations, and provide new solutions to increase efficiencies for the office.
  • Provide leadership and management support to the financial aid team.
  • Oversee a section of the undergraduate population for need-analysis and packaging
  • Perform related duties and special projects as assigned

Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience with knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and techniques
  • Extensive experience with computer software, word-processing, PowerPoint, Excel, and database programs.
  • A demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team-based environment, manage conflicting priorities, and work under deadlines
  • Excellent numeric reasoning ability
  • Knowledge of accounting concepts as well as competence in Excel (mastery of Excel preferred)
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Google suite of software applications
  • Detail-oriented with organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Able to demonstrate critical thinking and interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Able to practice effective cross-cultural communication skills both verbally and in writing
  • Willingness and ability to take initiative
  • Able to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner
  • Able to work well with all levels of employees, be flexible in nature, have sound judgment with an open and collaborative style that encourages teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in financial aid systems administration.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial aid technology in a higher education setting; PowerFAIDS experience strongly preferred; Workday Student experience desired
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience in making formal and informal presentations.


Additional Job Description

The Associate Director will perform most job duties in an office setting on the University campus in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In an effort to de-densify campus, Student Financial Aid is currently operating on a rotating staff schedule working from home and on campus. This position will not offer a remote working option after campus operations return to normal operations. This position requires compliance with the university vaccination policy for new hires.
