The Department of Ophthalmology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Laboratory Sciences Professional (Entry, Intermediate, Senior – Open Rank) position.

Nature of Work:

Entry, Intermediate, and Senior Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Senior, Intermediate, and Entry Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed. Some assignments will not move beyond the Senior level.

This posting is for a position in the Laboratory of Developmental Genetics directed by Dr. Joseph Brzezinski. The laboratory is part of CellSight, the Ocular Stem Cell and Regeneration Program in the Department of Ophthalmology, which encompasses a cross-disciplinary team of investigators working in a highly collaborative environment with the common goal of developing novel treatments for ocular diseases. The applicant will conduct research projects involving the development and evaluation of new cell-based therapeutic agents for retinal degenerative diseases. Research will focus on customizing the cell fate composition of human stem cell-derived retinal organoids. The applicant will conduct stem cell and retinal organoid cell culture, molecular genetics techniques, histology, and confocal microscopy. 

Examples of Duties Performed for All Levels:

    Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functionsUtilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze researchSupport analysis by preserving samples, completing sample preparation, and documenting and communicating resultsPrepare lab for daily operations. Includes stocking materials, maintaining equipment and cleanliness, and ensuring safetyProvide animal care related to research studies, as necessaryPick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as neededDispose of laboratory materials and samples using approved guidelines and instructionsComplete and maintain laboratory records, documents, databases, and related materialsReview and implement lab support policies and practices to meet organizational, operations and management needsEnsure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations
  • Perform experiments using human induced pluripotent stem cell cultures and retinal organoid tissues. Conduct histology, microscopy, and other molecular biological techniques as needed.
Additional Duties at the Intermediate and Senior Level:

    Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Maintains subject level documentation, equipment, and suppliesAssist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadership
Additional Duties at the Senior Level:

    Independently and creatively identify solutions to problems in the laboratoryIndependently review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projectsAssist team leads, supervisors, and other management personnel with creation and implementation of processes, procedures, and quality improvement initiativesAssist and train junior team membersProvide laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis, and manuscript preparation Serve as a resource to PIs and other stakeholders

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at:

    Entry level = $40,280 to $51,236Intermediate level = $43,834 to $55,757Senior level = $47,388 to $60,278
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
