Position Summary

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a fixed-term position as an Assistant Professor in astronomy. The central responsibility of this position will be to teach astronomy courses, including introduction to astronomy, with a 2/3 or 3/2 course load over the 2022-2023 academic year. The candidate will be encouraged to participate in the broader intellectual life of the department, and there will be opportunities for professional development in the department.

A Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or related field at the time of the start of the position is required, and previous experience teaching introductory astronomy as instructor of record is highly desirable, though candidates who have teaching experience not as instructor of record will also be considered. Applications from candidates who have demonstrated inclusive approaches to promoting student success are especially encouraged. The appointment will be for the 2022-2023 academic year, with an expected academic year salary in the range $52,000 to $54,000, depending on experience, with additional work and pay available in the summer of 2023 if desired. An extension for an additional year may be possible based on department needs and satisfactory performance, however, this position is not expected to be available on an ongoing basis.
