Overview

Oversees and provides administrative, technical, and educational support for Student Health Insurance at Macalester College. Educates students about mandatory insurance coverage, deadlines for compliance, the waiver and enrollment processes. Assists students 1:1 in navigating referrals, health care system, billing, and accessing care both on and off campus. Maintains on-line information about the student health insurance, shares information with both students and relevant campus partners. Works closely with the Health & Wellness Operations Manager on coding and billing that is submitted to the Mac-sponsored health insurance provider and Student Accounts and is responsible for managing direct billing and receivables. Provides regular communication between Macalester College and students, as well as between the insurer, broker, and students; and serves as a primary problem solver as issues arise from the campus community or insurer.

 

This is a hybrid position that will offer an in office and work from home weekly schedule.

The Laurie Hamre Center (also referred to as The Health & Wellness (HWC))  offers integrated medical, counseling, disability, health promotion, and sexual violence prevention services and programs for all students and serves as a resource supporting the entire Macalester community’s effort to build a healthy campus. The mission of the Laurie Hamre Center for Health & Wellness is to create a healthy community by working with students to achieve physical, emotional and social well-being while promoting the value of life-long learning and health.

Responsibilities
  • Student and campus partner education, development, and support:
    • A one-stop, human point-of-contact to help navigate the complexity of the U.S. health insurance system, of particular importance to international students and students with historically marginalized identities.
    • Student Education/Development, for example: Workshops for 1) incoming first years about how to navigate healthcare as emerging adults 2) graduating seniors about how to transfer care, insurance beyond SHS, 3) ISP students about how to navigate health care and insurance in the domestic US 4) Workshops specifically for students with historically marginalized identities and/or campus partners who help support these students.
    • Builds relationships with off campus partners, maintains robust off-campus referral lists, utilizing appropriate technology. Keeps these up to date and makes them accessible to students. Curates a list of Twin Cities counselors and health care providers with marginalized identities that will make mental health more accessible for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, first generation, and international students. 
    • Provides hands-on support to students via help identifying and accessing healthcare resources on and off-campus. Serves as a direct point of contact for helping a student who needs more supported help to set up counseling or medical care through Hamre Center.
    • Supports and educates students in health insurance utilization - on-line and in-person. Assists students with health insurance questions and concerns. Coordinate referral and authorization process through Health Service and act as intermediary between student health services and insurance company for smooth authorization process.
    • Fields general student inquiries via e-mail/phone messages during non-academic hours (winter and summer break for example)

 

  • Administrative Duties related to insurance:
    • Directs student health insurance enrollment process.  Reconciles enrollment and billing with Business Services. Responsible for accounts receivables for clinical services and coordinating financial reporting.
    • Prepares & submits charges to Macalester-offered health insurance company for students. Tracks reimbursements. Responsible for abstracting medical information including correct diagnosis code, level of services, testing and treatment procedures, and dates of service from patient medical records, complete forms,submitting medical claims, and answer inquiries from providers, patients, and insurance companies.
    • Investigates and resolves issues related to insurance billing: verify, change and enter information in the medical billing system. Review and research claims denials; contact insurance carriers for status updates, resubmit claims, and write appeals when necessary. Compile information for report generation.
    • Develop and maintain expertise regarding EHR and other software interfaces such as Banner, Beacon, serve as a resource on EHR, Insurance and finance to others.
    • Conduct routine audits for student compliance with mandatory insurance requirements.
    • Works with insurance broker to identify providers that meet student needs for brokers to negotiate with for coverage

 

  • Administrative related to Hamre office staff:
    • Initiate and maintain licensure, credentialing and CME needs for clinical staff and track all contracting issues through provider relations departments of insurance companies.
    • Works closely with Director to manage and monitor department
    • Assists with forms scanning, data entry, and other administrative work for records, referrals, projects; assists with varied Health & Wellness Center projects and tasks as needed.
    • Point of contact with hospital for records when someone is hospitalized, Return from hospital point of contact/referral coordinator

 

  •  Other duties as assigned, including: Participates in student affairs meetings, duties, and case management, serving as a partner to other student affairs professionals and ISP staff to navigate student needs, works closely with new case manager role
Qualifications
  • Associate's/Vocational degree or Certification in medical billing, healthcare or related field required
  • Experience in medical billing or medical insurance required 

 

Compensation & Benefits: 

This is a 0.9 FTE non-exempt position with an hourly wage of $22.06-$23.16 and Macalester’s Benefits as a part of its total compensation package.
