Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Employer Relations will support CICS' mission of helping students discover, explore, and pursue professional experiences, as part of an entrepreneurial, student-centric team with the Director and Assistant Director of Career Development. They will collaborate with the CICS community (employers, UMass staff and faculty, and a growing network of alumni), to benefit 2,400+ CICS undergraduate and graduate students. We welcome those looking to bring their relevant career skills to higher education.

Essential Functions

  • Help transform the college's talented, diverse students by leading scalable recruiting programs in collaboration with these groups:
    • Employers: Serve as the primary point of contact with CICS Career Partners including Amazon, Liberty Mutual, and Microsoft, developing recruiting goals and implementing plans. Organize in-person, virtual and hybrid recruiting events including the Tech Jobs & Internships Fair. Promote and attend Career Partner events. Recruit industry involvement and sponsorship of hackathons and student organization workshops. Coordinate Massachusetts employer networking to promote in-state retention.
    • Alumni: Maintain relationships with alumni, making it easier and more rewarding to give back by mentoring, coaching, and volunteering. Inspire and educate students by recognizing alumni who are “computing for the common good.” Network with alumni to monitor industry and recruiting trends, summarizing insights to train the CICS Careers team.
    • Students: Manage data collection of career outcomes, showcasing return on investment for CICS Career Partners and identifying prospects objectively based on student demand. Creatively promote employers and their employment opportunities in ways to engage student interest to build successful hiring pipelines. Enhance and develop resources for students to discover employers that match their search preferences (e.g., hiring international students).
    • UMass & CICS Staff: Contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives by coordinating industry involvement. Help the CICS Corporate Relations leads by supporting industry partners with recruiting and attracting new partners. Coordinate recruiting efforts with employer relations teams in the UMass Career Hub, College of Engineering, other UMass campuses, and local colleges.
    • Faculty: Design, develop, and facilitate experiential learning opportunities including co-ops and CICS credited internships, taking advantage of the Mount Ida Campus in Newton, MA. Study industry job descriptions to create a feedback loop with the CICS curriculum. Connect faculty leading project-based courses with industry collaborators. Monitor faculty collaborations to identify recruiting opportunities. Source and promote on-campus jobs from CICS and UMass Amherst faculty.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • A Bachelor's degree in any field and at least 2 years of related or transferable professional experience in business, consulting, human resources, recruitment, project management, teaching, sales, higher education administration, STEM or academic or career advising. A Master’s degree in Business, Human Resources, Higher Education or a related field may be substituted for the 2 years of required experience.
  • Independent initiative. Must have the ability to stay on task and work productively with minimal supervision or guidance.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, balancing the demands of concurrent and potentially competing projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively, and create and maintain trusted relationships with a diverse population of staff, faculty, students, and off-campus constituents.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write concisely, express thoughts clearly, and develop ideas in a logical sequence.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality. The ability to think through problems, organize and seek out data/information, identify key factors and underlying causes, and generate solutions.
  • Strong technology skills to work effectively including professional-level competency with email, calendars, word processing, spreadsheets and databases; ability to quickly learn and use a variety of new technology and tools such as Handshake, Google Drive, Slack and Trello.
  • Ability to periodically travel within the U.S. for conferences, employer site visits, and special events.

Additional Details

  • Willingness to perform related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
  • Must understand responsibilities with respect to FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act and other compliance requirements.
  • Primary work location is flexible. Candidates can choose to be based at the Mt. Ida campus or the Amherst campus, but must be willing to travel to the other campus periodically for employer site visits, events, etc.

Work Schedule

  • Monday - Friday 8:30 am-5:00 pm.
  • Required to work some nights and weekends.
  • This position has the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule, which is defined by the University as an arrangement where an employee’s work is regularly performed at a location other than the campus workspace for a portion of the week. As this position falls within the Professional Staff Union, it is subject to the terms and conditions of the Professional Staff Union collective bargaining agreement.
