Jobs in this career family provide direct professional support of research activities.  Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Professionals at the entry and intermediate level are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.

At these levels, duties are limited in scope; at an entry level, duties are performed with guidance and direction from other professionals and in a training and development capacity, while at an intermediate level they can be performed independently with occasional guidance and direction from other professionals.

Nature of Work

Entry and intermediate Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. These Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed. This position in the lab of Dr. Roberta Pelanda in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology will utilize molecular, genetic, immunological, and in vivo approaches, as well as working with mice, to help investigating and elucidating the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which mouse and human B cells are selected into the circulating B cell population where they orchestrate normal or autoimmune immune responses. The employee will be working closely with the laboratory staff in a small laboratory environment with growth potential. 

Examples of Duties Performed

    Provide animal care related to research studiesManagement of mouse colony, including husbandry and weaningCollection of tissue snips and blood from live mice.Preparation of mouse genomic DNA and use of PCR for genotyping.
Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functionsUtilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects as neededPerform experiments and tabulate and analyze researchPrepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas Maintenance of laboratory stocks and buffersOrdering and procurement of laboratory suppliesMaintenance of laboratory equipment and computersPick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as neededShipping and receiving biological samples from collaborators and vendorsDispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructionsReview, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and informationProvide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issuesAssist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needsContribute to maintain the regulatory documentation for EHS and IACUC, and facilitating the laboratory inspectionsMaintaining and updating lab protocolsAssist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadershipIndependently and creatively identify laboratory solutions (for intermediate level only)Independently Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects (for intermediate level only)This description is a summary only and is describing the general level of work being performed, it is not intended to be all-inclusive. Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at Entry - $40,280 - $51,236 and Intermediate - $43,834 - $55,757.  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications

Entry

    Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related fieldA combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
Intermediate

    Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related fieldA combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
One (1) year professional level research experience (for intermediate level only)Preferred Qualifications

  • Six months to one year of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory
  • Familiarity with Microsoft office suite of applications.  Familiarity Graphpad Prism and Excel.

Conditions of Employment:

Occasionally, experimental protocols will require working in the evening or on weekends.  The employee will be working closely with the principal investigator in a small laboratory environment with growth potential.
