Job Summary (Purpose and Function):

The Oncology Nurse Practitioner’s role at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is to ensure quality of care through consultation, collaboration, continuing education, certification and evaluation.

The Oncology APP at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine may practice in all or some of the following clinical settings:

University of Miami Hospital- 1400 NW 12 Ave, Miami, Florida 33136

University of Miami Hospital and Clinics/Sylvester Cancer Center-1475 NW 12th Ave. Miami, Florida 33136

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Accountabilities:

I. Clinical

A. Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of Hematology clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.

B. Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Works in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.

C. Writes/recommends prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.

D. Requests/recommends written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.

E. Assess and follow consult patients independent of physician when needed.

F. Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests and intervenes/recommends accordingly.

G. Advises collaborating physician of appropriate information regarding patient care and reports to the physician the actions provided/recommended to the patients.

H. Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.

I. Facilitates the appropriate actions and/or implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the clients.

J. Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.

K. Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients.

L. Performs patient triage and determines the urgency of physician’s evaluation.

M. Provides symptom management for side effects related to hematology oncologic treatment.

N. Rotates with colleagues working weekends and holidays.

O. Interacts with admitting physician, hospitalist and other multidisciplinary teams.

P. Prioritizes consults to present to attending physician and rounds with attending daily on patients as

appropriate.

Q. Writes consult/Inpatient note, discharge note and dictates as appropriate.

R. Performs Bone marrow biopsies, Lumbar punctures with IT chemo, and Omaya reservoir access. (Hematology APPs only)

Minimum Qualifications (Essential Requirements):

Minimum of two years in Hematology experience as a Nurse practitioner or PA

State License

Board certification

CITI certification or within three months of employment

CPR

ACLS

OCN or AOCNP preferred or within one year of employment
