Assistant Professor in Engineering and Computer Science

The College of Engineering at Wichita State University is pleased to announce the search for multiple tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor level to start in August 2022 or on a mutually agreed date. We seek candidates who will provide inspiration and leadership in research and are eager to contribute proactively to the inclusive hands-on learning environment that is a hallmark of our educational programs. The successful candidates will have an appointment in one of our engineering departments or the school of computing in the College. Faculty duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, mentoring students, conducting original scholarly research, and departmental service. There are ample opportunities to build partnerships with companies both on and off campus. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in engineering, computer science, data science, or a similar discipline by the beginning of employment. We are especially interested in applicants working in the following areas: astronautics, aerodynamics, high temperature materials, computing, computer science, data science, cybersecurity, advanced manufacturing, power electronics, and energy systems and storage.

We strongly encourage applications from candidates who will bring diverse perspectives to the College, and who enjoy working side-by-side with students and colleagues from a variety of backgrounds. About a third of the students in the College and almost half of the students at the University are first-generation. More than 16,000 students attend Wichita State, and the 330-acre campus is an architectural showpiece that includes an outdoor sculpture collection containing 77 works. WSU is family friendly. Available to all faculty are educational benefits for spouses and dependents, same-sex spouse benefits, and family leave. Very important for new faculty, there are also provisions to pause tenure review if they become a parent. WSU is a recipient of an NSF ADVANCE Catalyst award to assess and create avenues for women and minority STEM faculty to achieve their career goals.

Enrollment is growing steadily at Wichita State, and in particular, in the College of Engineering. A large fraction of our students work throughout the year in paid jobs at the 20+ companies on the Innovation Campus. In addition to the companies, the Innovation Campus is home to the National Institute of Aviation Research (NIAR), the new Deloitte Smart Factory@Wichita, the Crash Dynamics Lab, and the John Bardo Center where both the Innovation Hub and GoCreate maker spaces are located. We have state of the art facilities for robotics and automation, computer aided design and manufacturing, composites and coatings, mechanical, structural, and environmental testing, failure analysis, crash dynamics, extended reality, and reverse engineering as well as multiple wind/water tunnels and a research machine shop. The National Science Foundation recently ranked WSU 4th among all U.S. universities in aerospace research and development expenditures, and 1st in industry-funded aerospace research and development. The College of Engineering is ranked #77 nationally by USN&WR.

Apply online at http://www.jobs.wichita.edu. Submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a diversity statement, and succinct descriptions of teaching and research interests. Please provide names and contact information for three references. Successful candidates will be required to provide copies of diplomas and/or transcripts. The search committee will begin reviewing applications in May 2, 2022; however, the position will remain open until filled.
