The Neuromuscular Division has an opportunity available for a Post-Doctoral Fellow to join an established translational research program focused on the investigation of disease mechanism of and therapy development for genetic neurodegenerative conditions, with a particular focus on inherited peripheral neuropathies (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease – CMT) using cellular reprogramming and differentiation techniques to generate patient-specific neuronal cultures for disease modeling and drug screening. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will play a central role in the conduction of experiments, management of the laboratory and training of new lab members. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be expected to carry out high quality, accurate work in a fast-paced environment in which strong technical, analytical and managerial skills are essential. This individual will work directly with senior researchers, research staff, and, where necessary, external collaborators. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will report directly to Dr. Mario Saporta, Associate Professor of Neurology and Human Genetics and also actively interact with the laboratory team of Dr. Stephan Zuchner (Genetics), working in collaborative projects between the two research teams. Develops project proposals in line with research strategy. Generates patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) lines from somatic cells (fibroblasts, uroepithelial cells, lymphocytes, etc) from patients with distinct forms of CMT and unaffected controls. Generates iPSC-derived neuronal cultures. Characterizes cellular phenotypes relevant to pathophysiology and therapy of CMT. Maintains an overview of relevant research findings. Prepares reports of research results for public presentation through seminars, conferences and published manuscripts. Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice and guidance. Ensure the correct functioning of the laboratory. Conducts research on specific areas of study as assigned. Prepares research reports and technical papers for publishing. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories. Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories. Develops advanced analytical models and systems and provides solutions and analyses to support strategic and tactical decisions. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. Performs other duties as assigned.
