Job Description:

Position Description: The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is pleased to announce the search for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Acting with Voice/Speech emphasis. The appointment begins August 15, 2022.

 

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have teaching experience in the areas of voice and speech for theatrical productions, movement, and acting. MFA or terminal degree and university level teaching record required. Significant experience and/or certification in Linklater, Fitzmaurice, Knight-Thompson Speechwork and/or Joy of Phonetics is desirable. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, collaborative team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Tier One Research Institution. Salary commensurate with experience. Minimum Qualifications: 1) Terminal degree required. 2) Teaching experience in voice and speech required. 3) Ability to teach acting and movement required. 4) Must possess an ability to collaborate effectively in teams working within an established curriculum. 5) Effective organizational and communication skills required.

 

Duties: Teach major courses in BFA and MFA Acting curriculum. Responsibilities include teaching voice and speech and other related courses; vocal and dialect coaching for Illinois Theatre productions.

 

Rank and Salary: One Year Visiting Assistant Professor, full-time position. Salary is negotiable, commensurate with experience. The position reports to the Head of the Department of Theatre in connection with the Head of Acting.

Department: The Department of Theatre includes 24 faculty members, 12 Krannert Center Design and Technical faculty members, 3 academic staff, 7 campus affiliated faculty members, 120 undergraduates and more than 60 graduate students. The department offers BFA and MFA programs in acting; theatre studies; and design, technology and management. There are also MA and PhD programs in theatre studies. The department and its production programs are housed in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, a state of the art, multi-venue facility that operates collaboratively within an artistic structure comprised of theatre, dance, music, opera, and professional touring performances. Theatre faculty members work closely with Krannert Center staff and the faculties of the Department of Dance and the School of Music’s Lyric Theatre Program.

Academic Resources

Students have access to thousands of computer terminals in classrooms, residence halls, and campus libraries for use in classroom instruction, study, and research.

Research

Students and scholars find the University an ideal place to conduct research. The Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology is a model for interdisciplinary research, where eighteen research groups from sixteen University departments work within and across three broadly defined themes: biological intelligence, human-computer intelligent interaction, and molecular and electronic nanostructures. The University is also home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).

Undergraduate Education

The University has a fundamental commitment to undergraduate education. Nearly 28,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in nine undergraduate divisions, which together offer some 4,000 courses in more than 150 fields of study.

Undergraduate admission is highly selective. In the 2001 freshman class, students in the middle 50% had ACT scores between 25 and 30 and ranked between the 83rd and 96th percentiles of their high school graduating classes.

The University enrolls over 9,000 graduate and professional students in more than 100 disciplines. It is among the top five universities in number of earned doctorates awarded annually in the United States.

Also integral to the University's mission is a commitment to public engagement. Each year about 65,000 Illinois residents participate in scores of conferences, institutes, courses, and workshops presented statewide. Research and class projects take students and professors off campus to share expertise and technical support with Illinois farmers, manufacturing firms, and businesses. In a typical year, student volunteers log more than 60,000 volunteer hours.

The Arts

A major center for the arts, the campus attracts dozens of nationally and internationally renowned artists each year to its widely acclaimed Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. The University also supports two major museums: the Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion; and the Spurlock Museum, a museum of world history and culture. 

Other major facilities include the multipurpose Assembly Hall (16,500 seats); Memorial Stadium (70,000 seats), site of Big Ten Conference football games; and the Intramural-Physical Education Building, one of the largest recreational facilities of its kind on a university campus.
