Description:

The Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine (CSAM), School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, is seeking applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Internal Medicine (IM) and Interventional Radiology (IR) in the Academic Clinician Track (AC). The position is ideally suited for individuals with several years of experience after residency training that are looking to transition into an academic career as a faculty member.

The position primarily involves clinical service and teaching in a busy university teaching hospital, with a rapidly growing and challenging IR and IM caseload. Clinical service responsibilities will include the provision of patient care and supervision of day-to-day operations of the IM and IR services. Teaching responsibilities will include small group and didactic instruction of veterinary students rotating through the services and mentoring of residents both on IM and IR. The proximity of the Veterinary School to the Medical School fosters numerous collaborative research and clinical endeavors. Opportunity exists to participate in collaborative research projects within and outside the School of Veterinary Medicine. The Section of Medicine employs seven (ACVIM-Small Animal Internal Medicine) board-certified internists in support of the program. There are currently 12 residents enrolled in the residency-training program. The IR Service is currently staffed by one full time faculty in IR (DACVECC) and one dedicated nurse/service coordinator (CVT, AVECCT). More than 30 Diplomates of various American and European certifying Colleges, including seven ACVS surgeons, directly support the IR program.  The hospital is a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment with an excellent nursing staff and residents. The School is located amid a vibrant urban neighborhood that offers an abundance of cultural resources including music, art, theatres, and fine dining (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn/philadelphia). The University of Pennsylvania is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.

The successful candidate is expected to have history of or potential as an exemplary clinician and educator. Members of faculty in the Academic Clinician (AC) track faculty are primarily devoted to clinical service (42 weeks a year) in the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital and participate in the clinical instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Time away from clinical service is used for professional development, citizenship to the Department, and didactic teaching.  Developing or maintaining an independent scholarship or research is not a focus of the AC track and is not a requirement for reappointment or promotion.

Faculty AC positions are non-tenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years.  Promotion along the ladder of the University Academic ranks is available.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Full University benefits including health, dental, vision, and retirement accompany the position.

The successful candidate will spend approximately 75% of their clinical appointment on the Internal Medicine service and the remainder on the Interventional Radiology Service.
