Summary of Duties:

Play a role in shaping one of the largest insect collections in the Pacific Northwest US. The MT James Entomological Collection serves as an important regional resource and is an actively growing collection with especially strong representation in Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, and a newfound focus on Hymenoptera. Begun in 1892, the collection’s holdings number in the millions and are of significant historical and scientific importance. We seek a candidate with a strong research background in systematics, with a high level of expertise and experience working with museum collections. The position duties encompass collaborative projects, independent research, and local and international collecting and surveying. The candidate will undertake collection care and management and function as the primary coordinator for the operations of the museum. Other duties include, but are not limited to, budgeting, supervising and mentoring support staff, identifying and defining museum objectives, grant writing, and interacting with various stakeholders. Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree or a professional degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline with at least three (3) years relevant work experience. A PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering field may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required work experience.

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Must have familiarity with insect classification, taxonomic principles, handling of insect specimens, and best practices in natural history museums.

  • Demonstrated meticulous organizational and documentation skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to effectively interact with people in a positive manner.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong advantage for candidates who demonstrate expertise and experience in collections management, curatorial work, database management, loan processing, and staff and volunteer supervision.

  • Preference to candidates who have skills in insect identification and taxonomic literature.

  • Evidence of previous research using museum specimens or specimen-based datasets is desirable.

  • There will be some outreach and scientific communication, so experience with public education or web or exhibit design is valuable.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
