Position Summary

Provide patient care for ill and injured animals in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This position will primarily be working in the Oncology unit providing radiation therapy treatments; instructs and demonstrates techniques to students; assists students veterinary technicians and veterinarians in their work; maintains supplies, equipment and cleanliness of hospital areas. Work schedule is Monday through Friday, Eight hour days

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug- dosing, and sterilization; experience in the use of spreadsheet and word processing software. May require experience in a veterinary hospital research setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.

Desired Qualifications

6 -12 months as a Veterinary Technician in an educational setting; 6 months of experience in oncology service.

Lifting animal patients onto cages and medical equipment; carrying animals between cages and exam tables and gurneys; pushing carts containing animals and equipment to other units; climbing stairs carrying lab samples; restraining animals; preparing for medical procedures and treatment

Caring for animals with potential TB and rabies risk; may wear a respirator.
