Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

-Experience in fast paced hospital setting utilizing multiple software applications to meet demands of the service.
-Hands on experience with animal veterinary care preferred.

Position Summary:

An Animal Care/Veterinary/Animal Science Paraprofessional/Professional is responsible for providing care for or conducting research on livestock, pets (companion animals), or wild animals. An animal care/veterinary/animal science paraprofessional’s duties include, but are not limited to, examining and observing animals to detect signs of diseases or injuries, providing treatment to sick or injured animals, feeding and caring for animals, or collecting laboratory specimens, such as blood, urine, or feces, for testing. An animal care/veterinary/animal science paraprofessional typically reports to a Veterinary/Animal Science Professional and may occasionally supervise other animal care/veterinary/animal science paraprofessionals.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating excellent customer service, high degree of confidentiality, openness to teaching and providing consultation to a variety of stakeholders.
Knowledge of general animal anatomy and ability to recognize signs of medical needs in a patient.

Physical Demands:

1. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
2. Sit, stand, stoop bend and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
3. Manual dexterity to work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
4. Wear all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles etc.
5. Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
6. Work within an environment that has high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids that need disposal, and open wound management.
7. Wear unit specific protective equipment to avoid exposure to radiation producing machinery.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assists the Diagnostic Imaging RVTs with acquiring radiographic exams on Small and Large Animal patients. Assists the radiologists and radiology residents by restraining Small Animal patients for ultrasound exams. Administration of sedative drugs under the supervision of the clinical faculty, house officers or senior veterinary staff, by injectable routes, and monitoring of patient status during the imaging procedure.

Answer service main phone line, take procedure requests. Completion of patient records on both the Q-RIS and VetView systems. Maintain procedure schedule within service area. Establish effective working relationships with senior veterinary staff, senior veterinary students and clinicians.

Stocking area and supplies, maintain clinical records, assure facility cleanliness. Establish and maintain effective working relationships. Assist senior veterinary staff with animal care. This vet assistant cleans and stocks the 4 small animal radiology suites and the 1 large animal radiology suite, CT, and U/S- small and large animal. This vet assistant also cleans the radiology kennel room.
