The Center for Academic Programs (CAP) seeks candidates for an Academic Success Advisor 1 for the Student Support Services (SSS) program at the Storrs campus. The SSS program develops and implements initiatives for the recruitment, retention, and graduation of low-income, first-generation to college, and underrepresented students through its summer program and year-round undergraduate services.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advises and counsels students regarding specific curriculum decisions and career goals, provides personal and other non-academic counseling, academically advises on course selection and registration, and makes referrals as appropriate.
- Assists with the planning and implementation of the five-week summer program for incoming first-year SSS students
- Supports student orientation activities, such as group counseling and workshops, to acclimate students to the University
- Reviews and advocates for students regarding probation, dismissal, reinstatement, and financial aid appeals
- Teaches First Year Experience courses designed for students in the program
- Assists in the design and implementation of programming for students in the SSS program including workshops and special events
- Monitors students’ academic progress in cooperation with other university offices, analyzes transcripts, and makes recommendations for continuance in the program
- Supports SSS program initiatives, including recruiting students for various opportunities, assisting students through scholastic dismissal and financial aid appeal processes, and supporting the New Student Orientation process
- Serves on committees related to student success and retention
- Assists with special projects that advance the mission of the SSS program
- Performs related duties as required
- Bachelor’s degree in higher education, counseling, social sciences, or a related field and three years of experience in counseling low-income, first-generation, and minority and/or nontraditional students. OR Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, social sciences, or a related field and 1 year of experience in counseling low-income, first-generation, and minority and/or nontraditional students.
- Knowledge of academic advising and college student coaching
- Experience with teaching and/or conducting workshops
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and oral and written communication skills
- Ability to sometimes work flexible and irregular hours as needed including nights and weekends
- Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or a related field
- Three or more years of experience counseling in a higher education setting
- Bilingual English/Spanish
This is a full-time, end-dated, grant-funded position with the possibility of renewal based on funding and performance. The salary for this position is $52,096.
