About the Department:

NC State University provides a vibrant environment for research, teaching and mentoring across disciplines; ample opportunities will be available for collaborations with existing faculty and other newly hired colleagues in the cluster and Bioinformatics Research Center (BRC). Our location in the Research Triangle also facilitates interaction with faculty at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as with industry and government agencies.

The Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program is bringing some of the best and brightest minds to join NC State University’s interdisciplinary efforts to solve some of the globe’s most significant problems. Guided by a strong strategic plan and an aggressive vision, the cluster hiring program is adding new faculty members in select fields to add more breadth and depth to NC State’s already-
strong efforts.

Essential Job Duties:

As part of the Chancellor’s Faculty Excellence Program, NC State University seeks to recruit an outstanding faculty member to broaden its interdisciplinary faculty cluster in Bioinformatics. This cluster is a fully integrated part of the Bioinformatics Research Center (BRC). Founded in 1999 to develop tools and perform complex analyses in quantitative genetics, the BRC has grown to include strengths in evolutionary biology, precision health/agriculture, and multi-omics investigations.

We seek a faculty investigator for a tenured/tenure-track position to expand upon and complement NC State’s existing strengths in quantitative and computational methods in biology. Applicants from all relevant research areas will be considered. However, priority will be given to investigators working on genome- environment interactions and/or computational chemistry with a life sciences focus. We are particularly interested in applicants who can bridge experiment and theory, and have the ability to translate research outcomes to address biomedical or agricultural challenges. Demonstrated collaboration as a member of a multi-disciplinary team is highly desired. The new hire will help propel NC State to the forefront of efforts to develop and define new principles in genome-environment interactions.

We anticipate filling this position at Assistant Professor rank, but will consider applications at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The home department is anticipated to be in one of the five participating colleges (Agriculture & Life Sciences, Engineering, Natural Resources, Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine) and will be determined based on credentials and research fit.

The hire will be expected to provide leadership in quantitative and/or computational biology across NCSU, teach existing courses as appropriate, and develop specialized coursework in their area of expertise.

Organization

NC State: Think and Do

NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.

NC State studentsOur 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).

Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives

NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.

Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.

Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future

NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.
