Description:

To support the operation of the Hamilton Analytical Laboratory (HAL), an in-house and commercial WD-XRF facility that provides chemical analyses of geological materials to support scientific research and education. Primary responsibilities include training and supervision of undergraduate student workers on methods used to prepare geological samples for WD-XRF and LA-ICP-MS analysis. Additional responsibilities include maintaining records of all materials submitted for analysis, keeping track of invoices and payments, and ordering laboratory supplies.

This is a part time, benefited position with a 50% work schedule (910 hours a year).

Responsibilities:

  • Training and supervision of undergraduate student workers on methods used to prepare geological samples for WD-XRF and LA-ICP-MS analysis. This includes the use of a rock crusher, diamond rock saws, a lapidary table, analytical balances, a high temperature muffle furnace, and other equipment
  • Job requires the individual to work in the lab and to prepare samples when student employees are unavailable
  • Additional responsibilities include maintaining records of all materials submitted to the lab for analysis. This includes keeping track of the number and types of samples received, processed, and analyzed, as well as records of all invoices sent, and payments received.
  • Individual is also responsible for keeping track of and ordering consumable laboratory supplies  
  • Assist Environmental Health & Safety with quarterly radiation surveys

Qualifications:

Candidates should have a B.Sc. degree, preferably in geoscience, but other scientific disciplines will be considered. A basic knowledge of WD-XRF analysis and/or experience working in an analytical laboratory preferred. Previous experience supervising part-time workers and/or with maintaining laboratory and/or financial records also preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • A basic understanding of laboratory methods in general, and of geological sample processing methods in particular
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, to communicate clearly with clients and student employees
  • Good organizational skills and ability to schedule and supervise student employees efficiently
  • Good record keeping skills with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Experience using MS-Word and Excel
  • Strong interpersonal skills and willingness to support the educational goals of the College
