DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL OF NURSING & HEALTH SCIENCES

The School of Nursing & Health Sciences, located in both Tifton and ABAC Bainbridge, offers both a traditional two-year Associate of Science of Nursing (ASN) Degree and a one-year Bridge Program for students who have health sciences backgrounds such as licensed practical nurse, paramedics, or respiratory therapists. In addition, an RN-BSN Program is available for Registered Nurses to complete their baccalaureate degrees.

JOB SUMMARY

Nursing Faculty is a professional nurse who has the responsibility to provide didactic, lab, and/or clinical nursing instruction as well as coordination of learning activities. Assist in the development of students through the teaching/learning/evaluating process and provide counseling and guidance.

MAJOR DUTIES

Teaching

    Assists students in obtaining knowledge and applying nursing theories and principles to the practice of nursing in didactic, laboratory, and clinical environments. Uses multiple and varied teaching methods.Assists in the preparation of tests and evaluation materials as assigned.Keeps students and the Course Coordinator apprised of students’ progress.Assists in the preparation and implementation of the course, course calendar, and/or clinical schedules.Evaluates effectiveness of instruction based on learner and peer evaluations.Uses knowledge gained from evaluations in planning future learning experiences.Serves as a role model for students in the professional, social, and civic arena.

Advising:

    Advise pre-nursing students for admission to the nursing program. Advise nursing students for progression throughout the nursing program. Tutor students with marginal performance. Make referrals to the College support system for students as needed. Coordinate the admissions process for students entering the nursing program.

Student Engagement

    Advises students in accordance with the student’s needs.

Research, Scholarship and/or Creative Activities:

    Participate in programs of self-development (workshops, seminars, clinical practice, research symposia, conferences, classes, etc.). Assists in designing, conducting, evaluating, and publishing research and/or studies relating to health care and/or the nursing profession.Shares and utilizes investigational findings for the improvement of the teaching/learning process.Contributes to professional writings and makes scholarly presentations.

Service:

    Serve on School of Nursing & Health Sciences and Health Sciences Committees as appropriate.Participate in the overall academic affairs and programs affecting SONHS and the College.Participate actively in nursing professional and civic organizations.Coordinate and participate in recruitment events on the campus and in the community as assigned. Active in advocating nursing at the local, regional, and national levels.Belongs to professional organizations.Belongs to civic organizations which promote quality health care for all people.Serves as a nursing resource person for local health agencies when requested.

Skills/ Simulation Laboratories:

    Develop, present, and evaluate scenarios for skills lab/simulation experiences, utilizing role-playing, props, and dialogue to create a realistic learning environment.Develop and implement clinical simulation to meet accreditation standards.Create and maintain a respectful and professional working environment, incorporating active learning, reflective thinking, and a confidential debriefing process.Continuously update and refine skills lab/simulation experiences based on identified needs and to serve as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom/lab activities.Monitor and assure appropriate standards of lab cleanliness, provides for equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement.Ensure a safe and healthy work environment, complies with college health and safety policies, practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health & safety legislation and regulation.Model professional standards, including customer service, collaboration, communication, excellence, attendance, and related.
    Perform remediation with students in skills area.Any other duties as may be appropriately assigned or required by the Dean.
Additional Assignments

    Assist Course Coordinator to schedule clinical site rotations as appropriate. Develop and maintain record-keeping policies/procedures to maintain clinical records/clinical documentation.
    Ensure all clinical records/clinical documentation are submitted timely and are current. Recognizes and informs the Course Coordinator of existing or potential problems.

    Work is performed in an office, classroom, laboratory, or clinical settingWork is typically performed while sitting/intermittently sitting at a desk or table, walking, or stooping. Standing for long time periods and continuous movement is often required. May occasionally need to lift or move light objectsHours vary, but may include morning, afternoon, or evening work schedules to meet the needs of the students and the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

    Supervises and manages students in didactic and clinical areas.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

    Master’s degree in nursing is required.Academic credential or experiential preparation in area of teaching focus preferred.Familiarity with the pedagogical methods and goals for students seeking the Bachelor’s and/or Associate Degree in nursing is preferred.

License

    Must possess (or can obtain) a current, unencumbered Professional Registered Nursing License in the state of Georgia.
Clinical Experience

    Critical care and/or medical-surgical nursing experience is preferred.
