The School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science (CEES) within the Gallogly College of Engineering (GCoE) at the University of Oklahoma (OU) invites applications for a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in Structural Engineering. All areas within structural engineering will be considered, including but not limited to: application of statistics and probability to infrastructure resilience; sustainable infrastructure; design and mitigation strategies for natural and man-made hazards; integration of structural engineering with data science, machine learning, and systems engineering; innovative structural systems and materials; and physics-based, predictive modeling and simulation. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with existing and newly hired faculty within structural engineering, other areas of civil engineering, and/or across other disciplines to tackle large infrastructure challenges.

The Gallogly College of Engineering is targeting a 40% increase in faculty over the next five years to accommodate our strong growth in undergraduate engineering (75% increase in enrollment over the last 6 years) and in support of our ambitious plan for strategic research growth ( This position is part of the second wave of hires to complement existing faculty and expand into new areas in order to meet the grand challenges of the future. CEES’s 25 faculty offer four degrees: civil engineering, architectural engineering, environmental engineering, and environmental science with a combined enrollment of 414 B.S., 40 M.S., and 23 Ph.D. students. In 2018, CEES launched two online M.S. programs—one in civil engineering (with specialty tracks in transportation, structures, and geotechnical) and one in hydrology and water security—which are flourishing with an expected January 2022 combined enrollment of 250 remote M.S. students. CEES prides itself on excellence in research and teaching and is noted for its collaborative and collegial culture that has made it one of the top research units in the college. The department also recognizes the importance of providing a supportive academic environment, and toward that aim, CEES has a formal mentoring program for new faculty. Each new faculty member is paired with a faculty mentor to discuss topics such as teaching, grant writing, publishing, time management, networking, financial management, work/life balance, and navigating departmental culture. Applicants should have an earned Ph.D. in civil engineering or a closely related field at the start of the appointment. Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) is desirable. The successful applicant is expected to assist the department in offering core and elective undergraduate courses, as well as graduate courses in their area of specialty, with a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and inclusive pedagogy. They will also have the opportunity to teach in the burgeoning online program. The successful applicant is expected to develop an active research program leading to national and international recognition. CEES will serve as the academic home for the successful candidate, but joint appointments with other academic units will be considered, depending on research interests and expertise.
