Dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences


California State University Los Angeles (Cal State LA) seeks a Dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences (NSS) to provide the overall vision, strategic direction, long-term planning, and operational oversight for the college, and to pursue new opportunities to best serve students and the societal and business needs of the region. The new dean is expected to take office in July of 2022.

California State University Los Angeles (Cal State LA) is a comprehensive public institution dedicated to engagement, service, and the public good. It is one of the 23 campuses in the California State University system. The University is ranked number one in the United States for the upward mobility of its students, and is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, Minority-Serving Institution, and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution.

The University enrolls over 25,000 students; offers 142 bachelor's degrees, 122 master's degrees, and four doctoral degrees; and is nationally recognized for its achievements. The College of Natural and Social Sciences is the largest college at Cal State LA, with over 150 outstanding and dedicated faculty--who have won more Statewide Outstanding Professor Awards than faculty in any other academic unit in the California State University system. The college is committed to programs of academic excellence in the fields of natural and social sciences that provide access and opportunity for a uniquely diverse student body; to creating educational experiences for students that utilize and generate knowledge that is culturally responsive and inclusive; and to facilitating the development of the next generation of leaders in academic centers, industry, local, regional, and national government.

The College of NSS reflects a diversity of disciplines in its 12 departments and interdisciplinary programs that serve nearly 6,000 undergraduate majors and over 500 graduate students. The 12 departments are Anthropology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geosciences and Environment, History, Latin American Studies, Mathematics, Natural Science Program, Physics, and Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Required qualifications include an earned terminal degree from an accredited university in the natural sciences, social sciences, or a related field; an excellent record of teaching, scholarship, and service at the university-level with accomplishments to warrant appointment at the rank of tenured full professor within an existing department of the college; and demonstrated ability to create an inclusive and effective working environment among ethnically, racially, and culturally diverse faculty, staff and students.
