Second Shift: Tuesday through Saturday, 2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.

Job Overview

The Maintenance Mechanic III supports the operations of a 24 hour a day - 7 days a week building maintenance and response team to provide coverage and emergency response; and performs work on A/C and heating repairs, ventilating and pumping equipment; repair and troubleshoot all plumbing repairs (e.g., fire alarms, lock outs electrical outages, water main breaks, and building floods). Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Performs technical trades work to maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment as part of the services provided by the facilities management department to maintain university buildings.
  • As required, assists other trade shops in Facilities Operations Division with basic electrical and plumbing system maintenance and repair work.
  • Responsible for all repairs /maintenance of HVAC and refrigeration systems and components, and ability to read and comprehend DDC control logic.
  • Applies knowledge and experience with using associated test instruments and diagnostic tools to inspect, adjust, calibrate and install pneumatic and mechanical devices - in general, responsible for pneumatic air compressor, air lines, actuators, dampers, valves, thermostats, end devises, pneumatic-electronic (PE) switches, and so forth.
  • Performs master mechanic level maintenance and repairs in accordance with industry/trade practices.
  • Provides daily maintenance support to building users to respond to calls for service, make scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and similar service.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and unscheduled or special work such as overhauls, replacements, surveys and similar projects.
  • Uses all standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade and observes all safety rules, regulations and precautions in performing all duties.

Work Interactions

Reporting directly to the Supervisor of the Maintenance Shop, the Master Mechanic III works within the Facility Operations Division along with employees of other trades, and trades helpers in a direct service to the department ensuring a comfortable, safe and clean environment, in which the University community can live, learn and work. They work primarily with employees in the Facilities Management area; however, as work is being performed, they interact with students, faculty, staff and visitors as they traverse the campus; and they work cooperatively with fellow employees and building occupants to assure work is completed on time and according to specified plans.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • 4 to 5 years of experience performing general building maintenance work utilizing intermediate electrical, plumbing and HVAC /refrigeration skills
  • Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the stationary engineer trade.
  • Completion of a training program in general building maintenance that includes intermediate electrical, HVAC /refrigeration, and plumbing
  • DC 1st Class Engineer's License
  • Possession of an appropriate stationary engineer's license for the facility assigned
  • Universal EPA - CFC certification
  • Basic computer literacy with familiarity of basic MS Windows operating system programs
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in building automation controls with strong background in Direct Digital Control systems (DDC).
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued from the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia.


This position may require the incumbent to operate University commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10K+ (e.g., tow trucks, box trucks, trash trucks, buses, lifts, etc.). As such, the incumbent must possess a medical card and/or certificate issued by the Department of Transportation (DOT), which is issued by a licensed “medical examiner,” after completion of a DOT physical examination as defined in GU Policy1017 and DOT Regulations 391.11 (4) - Medical Card/Certificate and 390.5 (1) - Commercial Motor Vehicles (10K+) Definitions (http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov).

The Maintenance Mechanic III is an emergency position that requires the incumbent to report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time, regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late, or closing early.
