Job Description Summary
University of Pennsylvania Career Services, positioned within the division of University Life, is seeking a Senior Associate Director to establish direction for and oversee all career services, programs and outreach for graduate students, graduate alumni, and postdocs in 7 Schools at Penn. The individual hired will supervise a team consisting of 1.5 Associate Directors and a Coordinator (0.5 time), in addition to providing individual career advising to students and alumni along with planning and presenting workshops regarding all facets of career planning and professional development. The Senior Associate Director will collaborate with campus partners, engage with employers interested in hiring Penn students and alumni, coordinate events including career fairs, and play a leading role in developing digital content. Career Services offers a wonderful opportunity to be at the nexus of Penn students, alumni, employers, and campus partners, and provides an engaging environment to apply your skills in effective communication, relationship building, program/event managing and leadership/supervision.

Job Description

Responsibilities
  • Establish direction for and oversee all career services, programs and outreach for graduate students, graduate alumni, and postdocs in 7 Schools at Penn: Graduate Arts and Sciences, including LPS graduate programs; Annenberg; Weitzman School of Design; Wharton Doctoral Programs; PhDs/postdocs in Engineering and Applied Sciences; Perelman School of Medicine (including postdocs from affiliated Schools and institutions served by the Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs - CHOP, Wistar, Monell, PennDental, PennVet); Master's in Law students from Penn Carey Law; and alumni from these programs who seek support in career development and the job search process.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of an office-wide strategic plan, and use this as a basis for developing innovating programs and resources for graduate students and postdocs
  • Set priorities for the grad student/postdoc team and identify possible budget implications for those priorities.
  • Advise students and alumni through in-person and virtual appointments.
  • Stay up-to-date on career trends in academic employment. the expanded job market for PhDs, and careers relevant to the broad range of graduate students/postdocs served
  • Play a leading role in developing and using digital content and resources to provide students/postdocs with 24/7 access to fresh and engaging career resources
  • Develop strategic partnerships with campus stakeholders and faculty members in the development of future collaborative programs and events
  • Actively engage with employers to understand their changing recruiting needs and strategies in terms of hiring graduate students and postdocs
  • Support the oversight of the Career Plans/First Destination Survey process for students served by this team - in collaboration with the Data Visualizations & Analytics Manager
  • Explore new opportunities to collect and use data on graduate student/postdoc career preferences and roadblocks
  • Directly organize, oversee, and contribute to the BioSciences & Research Career Fair, the Design Career Fair, the GCC Career Expo, and the All-Ivy Environmental Career Fair
  • Oversee and evolve the Career Exploration Fellowship initiative for PhD students
  • Contribute to the development of a professional development curriculum proposal relevant to PhD students at Penn in collaboration with campus stakeholders at the Grad Center, Weingarten, CTL, and more.
  • Support the successful hosting of the 2024 GCC annual conference being held in Philadelphia by providing direct assistance to the Director of Graduate Career Initiatives
  • Represent Penn Career Services and Penn at professional meetings, and play an active role in the Graduate Career Consortium.
  • Willingness to contribute to and eventually lead one of the Career Services committees and/or University Life working groups
  • Supervise 1.5 advisors and 0.5 admin coordinator.
  • Receive administrative supervision from and report to the Director of Graduate Career Initiatives.


Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree or more is required and 3 years to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD helpful.
  • Motivation to take the initiative in evolving our approaches to graduate student career support as part of a multi-team office. Proven ability in program planning and implementation, communication and teamwork, with a strategic mindset to create recognizable series and events that create value and impact beyond our office
  • A desire to create innovative programming reflecting the changing needs of students/postdocs and the world of work.
  • Demonstrated advising skills and cultural competence to work with a diverse range of students/postdocs, with the ability to support graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and alumni who are applying to a variety of careers.
  • Outstanding presentation skills in different formats and for different audiences, with comfort creating digital content and resources.
  • Eagerness to learn and apply new technologies and tools, and a comfort with learning by doing.
  • Quick learner, with ability to assimilate and retain large volumes of information on career fields.
  • Collaborative nature with a willingness to work across teams, divisions, and Schools.
  • Demonstrated relationship building and networking skills.
  • Effective multi-tasker, with ability to juggle multiple priorities.
  • Positive, can-do attitude and outlook, with high energy to support a positive office environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise professional and support staff and support their professional and career development.
  • Eagerness to lead by example in all aspects of work and in supporting a positive work-life balance
