About the College/Unit/Department:

UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant provides research, education, training and science-based outreach to assist Georgia in solving problems and realizing opportunities for its coastal and marine environments. By advancing research, education and training, and outreach, UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant promotes the economic, cultural and environmental health of Georgia’s coast and prepares citizens to become good stewards of coastal ecosystems and watershed resources.

UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is a unit of Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia, supporting Georgia’s short- and long-term prosperity.

UGA Marine Extension serves a diverse coastal constituency and educates citizens about Georgia’s marine resources and the importance of being good environmental stewards. It provides assistance to marine industries by finding ways to increase their efficiency and effectiveness and encourages the development of new, environmentally sustainable industries.

The Georgia Sea Grant College Program is part of a national network of 34 Sea Grant programs located in every coastal and Great Lakes state, Puerto Rico, Lake Champlain, and Guam. These programs serve as a core of a dynamic university-based network of over 300 institutions involving more than 3,000 scientists, engineers, educators, students and outreach experts.

The network engages with academia and a wide variety of partners to address issues related to the coasts, oceans and marine resources. Sea Grant is a program of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the U.S.

Position Summary:

The Georgia Sea Grant Law Program, which began in 2015, is a partnership between Georgia Sea Grant and the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia. In providing objective analysis for coastal decision makers, the Georgia Sea Grant Legal Program strives to support informed and effective management of coastal resources to improve hazard resilience, encourage sustainable development and promote healthy coastal ecosystems. Highly interdisciplinary, the Georgia Sea Grant Legal Program works with scientists, local and state government leaders, extension agents and business owners to integrate the latest science with legal and policy analysis to improve hazard resilience, encourage sustainable development and promote healthy ecosystems throughout coastal Georgia.

Marine Extension-Georgia Sea Grant is pleased to offer a full-time one-year fellowship for applicants who have earned a J.D. within the past three years. This position will provide research and technical assistance in support of efforts to support the growing oyster aquaculture industry in Georgia and efforts to promote nature-based resilient approaches such as living shorelines. The position will assist in supporting Institute of Government and Marine Extension-Georgia Sea Grant faculty in meeting specific project deliverables related to oyster aquaculture industry development and promotion of living shorelines, likely focusing in areas such as planning and zoning, land use policy, environmental policy, water resources policy, and coastal management. Delivering presentations to stakeholder groups, including commercial, public, and private property owners and regulatory officials. Professional development activities also will include networking with relevant professional and non-governmental associations, making presentations, and traveling to learn about other oyster-focused work in the region. The position will provide grant and/or project management support for funded projects in these areas, including support writing and developing grant and project proposals. In addition, responsibilities also include providing general project support for public service faculty at the Institute of Government affiliated with the Georgia Sea Grant Law Program, which includes organizing meetings, working with clients and stakeholders, developing and implementing training and outreach materials, organizing principal investigators in large, interdisciplinary projects, conducting focus groups and community engagement, assisting with educational and training events, and providing general research and writing support. Conference presentations and publications will be encouraged and supported.

The work will be located primarily in Athens, Georgia, although the position will travel to meetings on the Georgia Coast and in the region. Travel and lodging costs will be covered.

Working under the direction of attorneys affiliated with the Georgia Sea Grant Law Program, execution of research and technical assistance to federal and state agencies and local governments to meet specific project deliverables related to oyster aquaculture industry development and living shorelines.
