Christopher Newport University’s Center for American Studies invites applications for a two-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in American Studies, effective August 2022. The successful candidate will hold a concurrent title as Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Leadership and American Studies. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. Departmental Information:
The successful candidate will have an appropriate Ph.D. by August 2022, a teaching/research focus and expertise in the one of the following areas: the American constitutional tradition, America’s intellectual history, public law in the United States, the judiciary, American diplomacy, America’s national security policies or grand strategy, or contemporary constitutional issues. The successful candidate must be academically qualified and prepared to teach in the American Studies core, including AMST 100, the foundations of America, and at least one of the following courses: AMST 120, Encounters with the Constitution, or AMST 200, the evolution of America, or AMST 300, a course that focuses on America’s role in the world, as well as upper level courses in the candidate’s expertise.
The Center for American Studies is an interdisciplinary center that promotes teaching and scholarship on America’s founding principles and history, economic foundations, and national security. The nominal teaching load for the Post-Doctoral Fellow is 2-2. Phi Beta Kappa membership is highly desirable.
The Department of Leadership and American Studies at Christopher Newport University comprises 16 faculty and offers a second major and a minor in Leadership Studies, and a major and minor in American Studies. The Leadership Studies minor won the Outstanding Leadership Program Award in 2019 from the Association of Leadership Educators. The newly developed second major in Leadership Studies began in the Fall 2020 semester. Our Center for American Studies promotes undergraduate and faculty research on America’s founding principles and history, economic foundations, and national security in order to promote sensible notions of political liberty, economic liberty, and civic responsibility. The Center sponsors undergraduate programming, annual conferences, national security workshops, a Junior Fellows program, and undergraduate research.
