The Director is responsible to envision and develop programs for counseling services that promote psychological well-being, prevent mental health issues through education, and remediate mental health challenges through counseling services.  Training and clinical services are to be delivered at the highest standards of professional and ethical practice.  Collaboration and consultation with other college departments are vital to the role of the Director of Counseling Services, as are advocacy, program development, staff recruitment, staff management, professional mentoring, and direct clinical skills.

The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

  • Acquire and maintain awareness of mental health needs of the college’s student body, establishing clinical services geared toward the prevention and remediation of the mental health needs of the student body.
  • Develop, maintain, and refine a structured training program for trainees in counseling and psychology, through whom the bulk of counseling and preventive/educational services of the counseling center are provided. This training should meet or exceed standards of the academic programs from which the trainees are recruited, as well as the accrediting and professional organizations in counseling and psychology (e.g., American Psychological Association and Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs).
  • Recruit, orient, and supervise (2-3) trainees in counseling and psychology, directly overseeing their professional and clinical development.
  • Conduct annual evaluation and report on effectiveness of the clinical training program objectives and bi-annual evaluation for supervisor(s) and trainees.
  • Maintain a counseling case load as needed to effectively provide services to students.
  • Manage any virtual third-party wellness programs.
  • Ensure highest standards of professional and ethical approaches to all areas of counseling at the counseling center (e.g., scope of practice, quality of training, quality of services proffered, documentation procedures).
  • Manage the budget to accomplish the objectives of the counseling center.
  • Promote and advocate for the counseling services and training programs of the counseling center to relevant Trinity constituents and community entities.
  • Provide educational and consultative support to the Residence Life staff, including limited on-call availability for crisis consultation with Residence Life staff.
  • Provide education and consultation to other faculty and staff with regard to student mental health issues and serve on the Care Team.
  • Report to the Vice President for Student Life and serve as a member of the Student Life/Athletics staff, including participation in division-wide and college-wide initiatives as relevant.
  • Proactively establish and maintain strategic and collaborative working relationships with the Campus Pastor, the Director of the Center for Vocation and Career Development, and the Director of the Office of Learning Services, in so far as the spiritual, vocational, and academic lives of students are intertwined with their psychological well-being and such cooperation contributes toward student retention and the accomplishment of the college’s mission.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and execution of the college’s Title IX policy and training.
  • Serve on college committees.
  • Engage in the life of the college by participating in various events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

A Master’s degree in relevant field required. Licensed clinical/counseling psychologist or LCPC in Illinois or ability to acquire Illinois LCPC upon hire. At least five years of experience preferred. Doctorate preferred. Commitment to serving as a collaborative member of the leadership team in Student Life/Athletics.  Ability to direct clinical trainees. Ability to read, edit documents and present professional correspondence. Ability to communicate to various stakeholders with discretion, professionalism and tact. Ability to analyze data.
