Scope of Job:
The Vice President of Research will be responsible for developing a strong vision to amplify UTRGV's culture of research integrity, operational excellence, and competitive innovation. Leading through influence and consensus, the VPR will emphasize interdisciplinary initiatives, generating excitement, enthusiasm, and buy-in to advance the research mission of the university.

Description of Duties:
The next VP of Research will provide effective leadership and guide institution-wide efforts to grow a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and collaborative research program to advance the process of designation as an emerging research institution and fully capitalize on the many opportunities and challenges of the present moment. The ideal candidate is a visionary, strategic, and inclusive leader and will be expected to:
  • Shape, manage the growth, and develop the agenda of the university’s research enterprise, accelerating the development of research excellence across the campus, in clinical settings, and in the community.
  • Build interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research teams in the areas of clinical research, personalized medicine, data science, health disparities, health outcomes, biomedical engineering, and others.
  • Oversee university-wide functions: strategic planning and initiatives; key performance indicators; grants and contracts management; core laboratory facilities; technology commercialization; research space management; capital improvement projects; animal care and use program; export control; and research integrity.
  • Lead UTRGV’s continued development of innovation, with a distinct focus on fostering collaboration and interdisciplinary efforts and communication of the university’s achievements.
  • Encourage technology development and commercialization across UTRGV and in collaboration with industry partners.
  • Serve as the champion and principal spokesperson for the development of efficient and robust research policy and infrastructure.
  • Promote research integrity and responsibility and uphold standards of ethical conduct in planning, conducting, and reporting research and scholarly activity.
  • Capitalize on the existing strengths of UTRGV’s research enterprise both inside and outside of the university, promoting connections among faculty, industry contacts, federal sponsors, and funding partners.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education:
Advanced or terminal degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:
M.D. and/or Ph.D.

Licenses/Certifications:
None.

Required Experience:
Progressive leadership responsibility at an academic health center
  • Experience managing faculty and staff in a complex, multi-disciplinary research environment; experience engaging with research in industry settings or internationally is a plus.
  • Leadership of successful campus-wide change management efforts.
  • Strategic development of clinical service lines, research compliance, and regulatory policies.


Knowledge and demonstrated expertise in research
  • Success with federal research, foundation, and grant funding programs and processes; emphasis on clinical and/or translational research is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of clinical, translational, and basic sciences research; previous involvement with industry-funded clinical trials.
A history of enabling innovation by faculty and students and driving research commercialization

Proven record of building diverse, equitable, and inclusive teams

Scholastic credentials and success
  • Achievement in research and scholarship to meet the requirements for obtaining tenure and appointment as a full professor.
  • Participation and leadership experience with national scientific/research societies, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), etc.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley.

To pursue excellence in research and innovation, the VP of Research will:
  • Bring visionary leadership to the Division of Research, growing and organizing the office to best support the development, promotion, and application of UTRGV’s intellectual property and its researchers, students, and facilities;

  • Review and enhance processes and practices to encourage and reinforce innovation;
  • Lead changes consistent with university strategy and gain buy-in with key constituents;
  • Set clear goals and create a culture celebrating positive change and experimentation, engaging people in a reasoned way; and
  • Be persistent in the pursuit of institutional priorities and strategic direction.

Collaborating and Influencing In an institution that values shared governance and community, the VP of Research will build consensus and support for strategic and tactical initiatives by:
  • Serving as an intellectual leader among the faculty and displaying the highest aspirations in developing and fulfilling the University’s research mission;
  • Representing and advocating for UTRGV Research in local, state, and national forums;
  • Collaborating with faculty, Deans, the President, Provost, and other colleagues across UTRGV, as well as community advocates, external partners, and federal sponsors in promoting university research priorities; and
  • Supporting diversity, equity, inclusion, and community initiatives and goals through visible, vocal, and proactive leadership.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
