Job Description

I. Title: Faculty

II. QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Educational

Master's Degree in Nursing required, a doctoral degree in nursing or a related field preferred;

National certification desirable;

B. Professional

Current valid license to practice in Ohio as a registered nurse and the jurisdiction where clinical occurs if not Ohio;

Teaching experience in baccalaureate or higher degree nursing programs preferred;

Membership in professional organizations;

Minimum of two years of previous nursing practice required; on-going nursing practice recommended;

Commitment to collaborating with colleagues in other health science disciplines;

Serves as a professional role model for colleagues, students, and the professional community.

C. Personal

Personal philosophy of nursing, education, and nursing education consistent with that of the University and the Department of Nursing;

Thinks creatively and critically;

Communicates effectively both orally and in writing;

Accepts responsibility for his/her own actions;

Works as a member of a team in an environment of change;

Seeks clarification or information before making decisions that affect University and Department operations.

III. RESPONSIBILITIES:

The general responsibilities of all teaching faculty are described in the University of Mount St. Joseph EMPLOYEE HANDBOOK which is available on the website.

The specific responsibilities of all teaching faculty in the Department of Nursing include:

A. THE DEPARTMENT OF NURSING

Supports the Mission of the University and the Mission, Philosophy and Strategic Plan of the Department of Nursing;

Participates in regular, special, and standing committees and other activities of the Department of Nursing;

Contributes to the development, evaluation, and revision of the curriculum utilizing the Organizing Framework for Effective Learning, the Overall and Specific Program Outcomes, a curriculum plan, and each faculty's experience and specialization in nursing;

Participates in identifying and ordering appropriate library and other media materials pertinent to the curriculum;

Contributes to the development and revision of departmental and student policies in relation to administration, admission, retention, evaluation, progression and graduation.

Assists in the development and evaluation of the Department’s Strategic Plan and the budget and in planning and decision making regarding major expenditures;

Acts in accord with the Department’s professional and ethical standards as developed and enunciated by the Faculty;

Accepts leadership responsibilities within the Department;

Represents the Department of Nursing on committees, other activities, and in the community;

Participates in the recruitment of qualified faculty and students;

Supervises the activities of teaching assistants, if utilized.

B. THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT:

1. Classroom Setting:

a. Selects, plans, organizes, and implements learning experiences in assigned courses which assist students to meet course and program outcomes;

b. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the subject matter;

c. Demonstrates ability to integrate related content areas;

d. Uses creativity in developing an interactive learning environment;

e. Evaluates students based on course outcomes, identifies strengths and areas needing improvement, and facilitates the development of strategies for improvement and mastery of the subject area.

2. Clinical setting

a. Facilitates integration of theory and research in clinical practice;

b. Makes assignments relevant to course outcomes and student's learning needs;

c. Identifies and evaluates agencies used for clinical laboratory experiences;

d. Establishes and maintains a cooperative working relationship with consumers, clinical agencies, and personnel;

e. Communicates goals for students' clinical practice according to specified criteria;

f. Evaluates students based on course outcomes, identifies strengths and areas needing improvement, and facilitates the development of strategies for improvement and mastery of clinical skills.

C. ACADEMIC ADVISING:

Interprets University Department and Program policies for students;

Facilitates clarification and/or validation of course requirements, Program, University, and agency policies when communicating with students;

Posts regularly scheduled times for student conferences and advising sessions;

Maintains professional boundaries and sets limits with students;

Makes appropriate referrals and assists students to seek professional counseling and remedial opportunities when necessary.
