Position Reports to: Director of Housing and Residence Life

Specific Responsibilities: The Resident Director shall be responsible for performing the following functions and activities:

  • Coordinates and implements student development and student engagement initiatives focused on holistic development, including academic support services, transition issues, leadership development, and inclusivity;
  • Builds positive relationships with students by demonstrating a desire to assist and understand them;
  • Advises students informally about personal, social, and academic problems, and when necessary, make appropriate referrals;
  • Provides support for students contributing to their personal growth, character development, safety, and wellness;
  • Mediates a range of student conflicts including roommate agreements and concerns;
  • Actively develops an environment, through dialogue, and other educational means that encourages and fosters inclusive communities;
  • Manages all operational aspects of the assigned hall, including opening and closing, occupancy management, maintenance, health and safety inspections, and damage billing;
  • Utilizes conduct and incident tracking systems to manage student behavior and communicate with university officials as required;
  • Communicates student’s rights and responsibilities and assists in adjudicating departmental and university code of conduct violations;
  • Provides staff coverage, including emergency duty, throughout the year including hall openings, closing, and college vacation days;
  • Handles emergency situations utilizing crisis intervention skills and resources;
  • Serves in an on-call rotation with other Housing and Residential Life staff members to respond to student behavioral issues for the campus encompassing approximately 400 on-campus residents;
  • Coordinates and implements co-curricular programs for the on-campus residents;
  • Participates in all departmental training and debriefings, including participation in discussions and activities;
  • Serves on departmental committees and projects as assigned;
  • Serves as a liaison across the Beacon College community and act as a referral resource for faculty, staff, students, and parents;
  • Participates in College functions such as orientation, graduation, open houses, fundraising, and community relations as needed;
  • Adheres to and enforces all Beacon College policies and procedures directly affecting the unit, including the Student Handbook;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required with experience working within a higher education environment preferred;
  • Candidates should have previous residence hall or student advising experience and have experience in mediation, crisis intervention, problem-solving, and decision-making;
  • Knowledge of best practices in higher education student housing management, including operating policies, programming, risk management, and legal/liability issues;
  • Knowledge of student development, counseling, and/or event management;
  • Evening and weekend commitments are expected;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.Strong ability to handle multiple priorities and work across many different constituencies;
  • A dynamic team player and a positive role model in working with students and in representing Beacon College;
  • Maintains a visible presence by living on campus, spending time with residents in regular programming, and providing after-hours support to students living in the designated residential community;
  • Supports the development of an inclusive residence hall community and demonstrates cultural competency in race, gender, gender identity expression, sexual orientation, religion, or national origin;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite is preferred.
