Nature of Work

Wayne State College is seeking an Assistant Director-Residence Life.

Assistant Director-Residence Life (live on-campus) serves as a senior member within the Department of Residence Life and focuses on hall operations, room assignments, hall occupancy, reports, data and auxiliary services. This includes supervision of a residence hall facility, management of the facility and student staff within the facility, as well as support the day to day operations and educational programs of the department.

Examples of Work Performed

1. Provide assistance to the StarRez administrator for the Housing & Residence Life Office. The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting the Associate Director for Housing Operations with housing accounting functions, accounts payable and accounts receivable/collections, data entry, and assisting site maintenance through StarRez.
a. Process all applications for Residence Life Housing.
i. Set up and maintain student files, send letters of acknowledgment.
ii. Assign and contract students, coordinate move-in & move-out.
iii. Maintain accurate computer information.
b. Facilitate the room assignment process for all students (first-year, transfer and returning students).
c. Maintain accurate housing records and provide occupancy and other appropriate reports.
i. Ensure all students have up to date housing contracts and emergency contact information.
ii. Update the housing system to accurately reflect cancellations and student room changes. Communicate with students and parents regarding housing placement, concerns and issues.
 

2. Reside in a Residence Hall, supervise/oversee all hall facilities and furnishings along with student staff and Resident Assistants in that residence hall facility.

3. Collaborate with other offices to ensure that housing procedures run smoothly and are effectively communicated with other offices. Work with the staff in Admissions and Athletics regarding housing assignments, pre-term housing, and other administrative issues. Work with Student Health and Counseling, and Disability Services to ensure that housing accommodations for students with special needs are effectively addressed.

4. Support the Director of Residence Life in the preparation of statistical data and other special projects and reports.
a. Billing report.
b. Occupancy and retention.
c. Assessment.

5. Ensure that the Office of Residence Life website is accurately maintained, appealing, and informative for current students, prospective students, and families.

6. Coordinate campus housing check-in and check-out procedures.
a. Maintain accurate records of keys and occupancy.
b. Train staff on procedures for issuing, replacement, and collection of room keys and on protocol for room inspections, documentation of condition of rooms, and assessment of room damages.
c. Coordinate damage charges and reporting.

7. Assist the Associate Directors in creating a Residence Life team that is well-versed in institutional persistence goals, and works to provide excellent customer service to students and families.

8. Assist the Associate Director for Housing Operations and Associate Director for Residence Education with the hiring, training, evaluating a team of Resident Assistants and/or Graduate Assistants.

9. Coordinate the reporting of room & board waivers with Financial Aid and verify that the correct information appears on the student’s financials.

10. Perform training for staff on record keeping, policy, and procedures in housing.

11. Track hours and maintain records for desk attendants and resident assistants in assigned Residence Hall.

12. Responsible for daily monitoring and responding of the Residence Life departmental email and communicate with students and parents regarding concerns and issues in a timely, professional and effective manner.

13. Attend Residence Life team meetings.

14. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or related work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in student development or related area
• 1-2 years of full-time Residence Life experience
• Ability to communicate effectively and work with various constituencies including fellow professionals, students, and parents in a student centered environment
• Demonstrated time management and organizational skills
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Commitment to educating in a residential environment
• Knowledge of student development theory and higher education ethical practices
• Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to diverse student populations
