Position Description:

The Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Public Health, Health Education, or Health Promotion.University:Founded in 1899 as a small teaching college, Texas State University is now home to 38,644 students. The university holds a Carnegie classification of Doctoral University-High Research Activity and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain eligibility for the State of Texas’ National Research University Fund.Texas State University is located along the beautiful San Marcos River. San Marcos is in the center of the innovation corridor, 40 minutes south of Austin and 60 minutes north of San Antonio and is rich in vibrant and eclectic communities. The campus is situated within a public school district that is attended by more than 50 percent Latinx students.Department:The Department of Health and Human Performance, with 45 full-time faculty, serves approximately 2,300 students seeking undergraduate and graduate degrees in Athletic Training, Exercise and Sports Science, Public Health, and Recreation. Texas State University also offers a comprehensive employee wellness program, led by an interdisciplinary research team that provides opportunities for collaborative studies.The public health program offers both a B.S. in Public Health and an M.S. in Public Health Education and Promotion. We are seeking candidates who can contribute to Texas State University’s Translational Health Research Initiative, in the area of public health, health education, health promotion, and other related research areas.This is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a nine-month academic year appointment beginning fall 2022. The successful candidate will: (1) be responsible for delivering engaged learning activities and instruction in undergraduate public health and graduate public health education and promotion courses; (2) sustain a focused area of research that results in peer-reviewed publications and external funding; (3) mentor graduate students and serve on thesis and culminating project committees; and (4) engage in institutional service by serving on departmental, college, and university committees.Candidates should share our commitment to educational equity and high-quality education of students from currently and historically underserved and systematically marginalized communities. Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate (e.g., PhD, DrPH) in public health, health education, health promotion, health behavior, or related field by September 1, 2022.
  • Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Evidence of potential for sustained research and scholarship.
  • Evidence of potential to obtain external funding for research.
  • CHES/MCHES or CPH eligible.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CHES/MCHES or CPH certification.
  • Demonstrable evidence of teaching public health education, health promotion, or health behavior courses at the university level.
  • Demonstrable evidence of using a variety of instructional strategies including face-to-face, online, and hybrid delivery, experiential learning, or field-based experiences to engage students with diverse needs and experiences.
  • Demonstrable evidence of sustained scholarship in public health, health education, health promotion, or health behavior.
  • Research focus area including social determinants of health, health disparities, health equity, or related area.
  • Demonstrable evidence of participation in grant writing and obtaining external funding for public health, health education, health promotion, or health behavior research.
  • Ability to integrate a diverse and multicultural perspectives into professional practice (i.e., teaching, research, service).
  • Evidence of engagement in professional organizations.
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other institutional employees.
