SUMMARY:

The Dean of Academic Affairs and Retention is responsible for the management of academic operations and student support services to ensure student success and persistence at the assigned campus. This position is responsible for creating and sustaining an environment of academic and professional excellence for students and faculty and a collaborative working environment with Campus team members.


KEY JOB ELEMENTS:

  • Oversee the delivery of high-quality academic programs and exceptional student support on the campus.
  • Serve as a member and rotating facilitator of the campus Executive Committee.
  • Ensure, with other EC team members, that a collaborative and positive culture is maintained on the campus.
  • Create and execute an effective faculty on-boarding.
  • At the direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs (AVCAA) institute processes to assure that all Faculty are being appropriately supervised, developed and evaluated.
  • Provide input so that the AVCAA can manage the course scheduling process.
  • Under the direction of the AVCAA, manage a robust and effective Continuing Student Review process, consistent with best practices developed by the University. Generate CSR reports and distribute to all Program Directors, EC team members, ACs and ASC weekly.
  • Lead the Student Success Committee on the Campus.
  • Effectively manage the Academic Counselors and Academic Success Coordinator to maximize retention to graduation.
  • Identify students needing support or assistance, working with Dean of Student Affairs, Academic Counselors, and Academic Success Center. Create success plans for identified students.
  • Assess all first-time and re-entry students for strengths and areas that need attention; develop programs to address areas of deficiency.
  • Assist faculty and staff in identifying trends and researching best practices in student persistence and program completion, and then implementing on the Campus as applicable and practical.
  • Explore, assess, examine and take steps to eliminate the barriers that prevent college students from graduating on time. Stay current on student retention data, research, and programs regarding traditional and non-traditional commuter students through reading publications and attending targeted workshops.
  • In coordination with the AVCAA, oversee academic policy and procedures, including institutional policies, students’ rights and responsibilities, and academic policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the dissemination of the Academic Calendar, Academic Catalogs, Student Handbooks and Campus Registration Bulletins to Campus stakeholders.
  • Interface with the Dean of Student Affairs, the Director of Career Services and Program Advisory Councils to assess the competitiveness of our graduates.
  • Comply with South University policies and local and state Regulations.
  • Serve as the lead person on the campus for CampusVue, providing management and training for Campus stakeholders.
  • Actively participate in the University’s institutional effectiveness process and ensure programmatic and institutional standards are met or exceeded on the campus.
  • In partnership with the Vice Chancellor for Compliance, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and College Deans, coordinate compliance of the campus’s educational practices with national, state and regional regulations, and ensure the appropriate accrediting criteria and requirements are maintained.
REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Meet data needs and reporting responsibilities with the Director of Institutional Research.
  • Meet reporting needs working in conjunction with the AVCAA.
  • Coordinate administration of Faculty and Student Surveys.
  • Provide CampusVue training for appropriate staff at the campuses and central office.
  • Provide ad hoc reports to campus, University Administration and executive team as requested.
REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 7 years of academic operations leadership experience in a university setting (registrar and/or admissions experience a plus).
  • Terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in either higher education, leadership, or in an area related to one of the University’s academic programs.
  • Relevant teaching experience in a university.
  • Ability to resolve inquiries and complaints from employees, students, regulatory agencies, or members of the academic or business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to faculty and academic and campus leaders, university leaders, and public groups.
ABILITY TO TRAVEL:

The individual must be able to travel out of the local area occasionally on an overnight basis as required to participate in a variety of conferences and meetings.
