Knox College seeks a licensed counselor with strong leadership skills to serve as the Director of Counseling Services. Combining clinical and administrative responsibilities, the Director provides vision and leadership in planning, developing, implementing and managing student-centered wellness programs that advance Knox’s mission and values while also providing direct mental health services to students.
This is a twelve-month, full-time position reporting to the Vice President for Student Development.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Develop, administer and assess the goals, policies, procedures and activities of Counseling Services to effectively meet the needs of students at a residential liberal arts college. Oversee a full spectrum of clinical services, educational outreach and wellness initiatives.
- Provide direct counseling services for students including individual and group counseling and crisis intervention (including after hours when needed).
- Provide training and consultation to college faculty, staff and student leaders regarding the prevention and identification of mental health concerns.
- Provide campus-wide leadership on issues related to student wellness. Collaborate with staff, faculty and students to coordinate a comprehensive approach to health and wellness programming.
- Liaise with local doctors, hospitals, clinics, and other mental health treatment programs and agencies.
- Other duties and committees as assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Expertise and/or successful experience in crisis intervention and working with a broad range of clinical problems. Experience managing access to services, including demand, wait times, barriers, and delays. Experience in research/analysis and evaluation of clinical services and clinical data reports. A strong knowledge of HIPAA regulations for mental health agencies. Evidence of progressive administrative and professional development specifically in the area of mental health. Experience/ability to consult with the campus community regarding student concerns. Excellent leadership skills to lead and manage a complex department. Leadership experience in working with various individuals/work groups, leading and managing change and addressing conflict. Skill in sound time management and work proactively to mitigate delays, budget problems, and any additional complication that may jeopardize operations of unit. Strong computer skills with experience with a broad range of Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) to be able to prepare a wide variety of correspondence, reports, presentation, etc. including applications related to Counseling Services operations. Experience with electronic medical records, highly preferred. Excellent organizational, administrative, and communication skills including oral, listening, and writing, with the ability to effectively handle a broad range of interpersonal contacts with individuals or groups from different socioeconomic and diverse backgrounds.
Essential qualifications:
Graduate degree in clinical psychology, marriage and family therapy or related field and a minimum of three years of clinical and administrative experience. State of Illinois licensure as a clinical psychologist, marriage and family therapist or equivalent. Understanding of college student mental health issues and a desire to work with students is essential. Experience working with traditionally underserved populations (i.e. first-generation college students, students from low-income households, students of color and/or LGBT students) preferred. Excellent organizational and administrative abilities; effective written and oral communication skills; compatibility with an environment focused on teamwork and collaboration.
