Jobs in this career family provide direct professional support of research activities.  Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.

Managers are responsible for the day-to-day operation of functional work units, including the Development and implementation of processes consistent with college, school or departmental strategies and processes and the supervision of professional and support staff.

Position Emphasis/Nature of Work:

The University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Administration, has an opening for a full-time Post Award Grants Manager (Research Services Manager) to work at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora.

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest Departments in the School of Medicine and is rapidly growing. It includes 26 sections including over 1100 faculty members and over 1500 employees. The Department of Pediatrics has in excess of $86 million in grant awards annually with over $57 million from the NIH.  In FY 2020 the Post-Award Team was responsible for 400 awards (including but not limited to Federal, State, Foundation and Industry) for over 200 active Principal Investigators. The major function of the Post Award Grants Manager position is to provide comprehensive oversight and leadership to the Post Award Team by providing leadership, delivering training, process improvement opportunities and metric development within the Department of Pediatrics.  It will include fiscal, contractual, and operational responsibilities for the efficient operation of the grant management process.  The position will also be responsible for working closely with other Department of Pediatrics research support personnel within the individual sections to provide training, guidance and oversight.

This position will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of a program, functional work units, including the development and implementation of processes consistent with college, school or departmental strategies and processes, and the supervision of professional and support staff. 

Supervision Received

Under general direction, this position reports directly to the Associate Grants Program Director and the Grants Program Director in the Department of Pediatrics.

Supervision Exercised

The position will be responsible for supervising a Post Award Team totaling 9.0 FTE.

Specific Duties:

The position requires extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for the Post Award team.

  • This position will act as the lead for the Post Award team members and will work to create standardization and consistency in processes with clear communication plans for all key stakeholders/business partners. 
  • The position will be responsible for fielding questions from the team regarding University, Office of Grants and Contracts and Department of Pediatrics policies and how to best operationalize in our given structure, as well as how to create efficiencies when there is opportunity. 
  • The Post Award Grants Manager position will be the key driver in implementing process improvement opportunities across the Post Award Team through identified opportunities from conversations with our partners in Department of Pediatric sections, Office of Grants and Contracts, CHCO Finance, Research Institute, etc.
  • In partnership with the Associate Grants Program Director and Grants Program Director, the position will be responsible for training the Post Award staff and various other department research support staff (decentralized partners) on University, Office of Grants and Contracts and Department of Pediatrics policies/procedures by creating a standard training for all staff engaged in research administration (new and existing staff).
  • In partnership with the Associate Grants Program Director and Grants Program Director, the position will be responsible for developing a training program for new staff as they are recruited to join the team, as a way to onboard them into the Pre Award and/or Post Award team.
  • he Post Award Grants Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the workloads of the Post Award team are evaluated regularly and distributed appropriately while ensuring the operations of the team remain efficient, as well as capitalizing on opportunities for efficiencies in our processes.
  • The Post Award Grants Manager position will be responsible for developing specific metrics that can be tracked, reported and delivered on a regular basis to the Associate Grants Program Director and Grants Program Director, as well as to our customers.
  • When appropriate, the position will be responsible for escalating issues to the Associate Grants Program Director and Grants Program Director while providing proposed solutions for implementation.
  • The position will provide suggestions to the Grants Program Director and Associate Grants Program Director upon identifying areas of opportunity for improved efficiency and overall customer service. 
  • The Post Award Grants Manager will take the lead on all recruitment efforts for any new and/or replacement positions for the Post Award team.
  • The position will provide post award coverage for other team members when needed during times of leave, etc.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in accounting, finance, business administration, business or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of experience managing employees in an administrative team setting. The position requires extensive, diverse and progressive experience at the management level, including direct responsibility for multiple staff and/or a team.  
  • Two (2) years of professional experience working in government, non-profit and/or academic administration or business office setting.
Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Must be willing and able to successfully pass a 10-panel drug test
  • Must be willing and able to successfully pass a national criminal and sex-offender background check
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in interpreting and applying policies from multiple levels of authority (federal, state, and institutional).
  • Experience serving as a resource for others.
  • Experience in leading meetings, presenting data and/or making presentations to leadership.
  • Experience working with PeopleSoft (HRMS/Finance).
  • Experience using spreadsheets (Excel), email (Outlook) and calendar software.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $64,455 to $85,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
