Job Description
SUMMARY:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of complex grounds maintenance duties including specialized grounds maintenance work; assist in landscape design and plant selection; install, maintain, and repair irrigation systems; application of toxic chemicals for pest, insect and weed control and finish cement work. Work in this classification is distinguished from that of the Grounds Maintenance Worker by the greater complexity of the assignments received, greater independence, and exercise of judgment and initiative in the performance of daily duties.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform a variety of complex grounds maintenance and landscape duties including planting, fertilizing, mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, weeding, fertilizing and watering lawns and grounds to maintain an attractive, safe and functional outdoor environment that meets established guidelines.
Observe and determine the need for fertilizers, soil amendments and mineral additives for all planted areas according to individual and seasonal requirements.
Repair and maintain irrigation system as assigned; repair, rebuild or replace sprinkler lines, pipes, valves, sprinklers and other parts as necessary. Install new sprinkler systems; dig trenches, lay pipes and install valves; check sprinkler system to ensure proper and efficient operation.
Maintain, adjust and repair electric clocks and control valves; use irrigation methods to adjust the amount of water consumption and prevent waste.
Perform outdoor pest, insect and weed control functions as assigned; identify pests and weeds to be eradicated; select, mix and apply insecticides, pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers to prevent or control weeds, disease, or insect infestation and stimulate growth; determine appropriate times to spray; follow all applicable laws and regulations associated with outdoor applications.
Review site event schedules and calendar to coordinate with personnel, construction contractors and organizations in the scheduling of gardening and landscape work in relation to various other college and community activities; coordinate with college maintenance personnel on remodel and construction projects.
Inspect grounds and irrigation systems checking for damage, vandalism, and proper pest and disease control.
Accountable for proper use and disposal of all chemicals used in grounds maintenance to prevent excess landscape irrigations or chemical runoff to storm drains in accordance with Federal and State laws and regulations.
Remove paper, trash and other debris from grounds; rake leaves and sweep walkways and parking areas. Access and remove debris from building rooftops, gutters and downspouts; identify problems and report required maintenance.
Properly operate a variety of hand power tools, equipment and machines (e.g. mowers, edgers, shears, blowers, trucks tractors, skip loaders, cement mixers, sprayers, etc.) associated with technical grounds maintenance work; maintain tools and equipment in proper working condition and perform minor repairs; report need for major repairs to supervisor.
Order parts and supplies as required. Maintain a library of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and other departmental records as required.
Maintain currency of qualifications for area of assignment; actively seek and apply current technical landscape and plant knowledge for assigned projects; complete continuing education hours to meet Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicators Certificate Category B renewal.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
Prepare landscaped areas for planting; assist in determining appropriate plant species based on planting and growing requirements appropriate to the site, soil, climate and preference for drought tolerant plant materials.
Read, interpret and follow blueprint construction specifications, work orders, and diagrams; make recommendations related to the design of landscape and irrigation systems; document changes as appropriate.
May oversee, maintain, mark and prepare athletic fields; coordinate and provide direction for grounds maintenance preparations appropriate for athletic events.
Perform cement work as assigned; mix, pour and finish cement for sidewalks, curbs, gutters and pads.
Repair and replace storm drains, and catch basins.
Maintain and repair electric pumps for underground utility system.
May act as lead or supervisor in the absence of the grounds maintenance crew leader or supervisor.
Provide work direction and guidance to other personnel as assigned.
Maintain departmental area(s) in a safe, clean and orderly condition; assure compliance with established safety procedures and regulations.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Federal and state laws applicable to outdoor pesticide application: such as posting, re-entry time, labeling, and personal protective equipment, proper usage, techniques, and appropriate chemicals for eradication and control.
- Methods, equipment and materials used in planting, propagating, cultivating, pruning and caring for plants, flowers, shrubs, lawns and trees; irrigation system installation, maintenance and repair, pest, insect and weed control and finish cement work.
- Proper techniques for mowing, lawn maintenance, edging, planting, weeding, watering, renovation, tree pruning, fertilizing, and other grounds maintenance procedures.
- Methods and procedures of cultivating, fertilizing, watering and spraying lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers.
- Health and safety precautions and procedures in handling hazardous chemicals and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.
- Equipment, tractor and small engine repair and maintenance techniques.
- Federal, State and local laws and regulations on emergency clean up and disposal of hazardous chemicals used in grounds maintenance.
- Principles of water hydraulics.
ABILITY TO:
- Perform a variety of specialized grounds maintenance duties, such as irrigation system maintenance and repair, the application of chemicals for pest, insect and weed control and finish cement work.
- Read blueprints; design and layout landscape and irrigation plans.
- Perform general grounds maintenance work including mowing, edging and weeding.
- Maintain and repair sprinkler systems.
- Use assigned methods for the control and eradication of pests, insects and weeds; determine treatment method based upon occupant conditions (e.g., age, health) of area.
- Perform mathematical calculations to estimate, measure, and determine materials required.
- Mark and maintain athletic fields for a variety of sporting events.
- Perform cement work including mixing, pouring and finishing cement.
- Operate a variety of general and specialized grounds maintenance equipment, tools and machines.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Train and provide work direction to others.
- Lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
- Maintain routine records.
- Work independently; meet schedules and timelines.
- Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
- Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
- Operate a personal computer in an effective manner consistent with requirements of the position.
EDUCATION:
Graduation from high school or equivalent supplemented by additional training in landscape technology or a related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Increasingly responsible grounds or landscape maintenance experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license and ability to qualify for district vehicle insurance coverage. California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicators Certificate Category B (Landscape Maintenance) and continuing education to maintain certificate renewal (preferred - not required).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Outdoor environment; subject to lifting, bending, climbing, pushing and exposure to adverse weather conditions and potentially hazardous chemicals; subject to lifting objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
