Appointment: The University of Puget Sound, School of Physical Therapy is seeking candidates for a full-time Director of Clinical Education (DCE) at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor (non-tenure-track position) for its Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program.
The Director of Clinical Education’s primary responsibility is to manage the clinical education program in support of the programs mission and goals. The DCE is assisted by an Onsite Clinic Coordinator and collaborates with the academic faculty to establish clinical education standards. The responsibilities of the DCE include, but are not limited to the following:
Serve as the liaison between the academic program and the clinical education site.Select clinical learning environments that demonstrate sound patient management, ethical and professional behavior, and contemporary physical therapy practice.Manage and monitor educational affiliation agreements between the university and clinical sites.Develop, monitor and refine the clinical education component of the physical therapy curriculum, including Integrated Clinical Experiences in the Onsite Physical Therapy Clinic, clinical education seminars, and full-time clinical experiences.Assign students to clinical experiences that are appropriate for their learning needs.Ensure student readiness for clinical practice in cooperation with academic and clinical faculty in the Onsite Clinic, and determine the ability to integrate didactic content, and demonstrate safe and ethical practices.Facilitate quality learning experiences for students during all aspects of clinical education, including the Integrated Clinical Experiences in the Onsite Clinic.Assist the Site Coordinator of Clinical Education (SCCE), Clinical Instructor (CI) and students with problem-solving and addressing conflict during clinical experiences, should the need arise, then plan for remedial or accommodative clinical education experiences as needed.Determine grades for off-site clinical experiences using a variety of data including: Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI) ratings and summative comments, site visit notes, learning contracts, and completed assignments.Engage core faculty and the clinical education advisory committee in discussions about clinical education planning, implementation, and assessment.The DCE is available to students by cell phone, letter, or e-mail, whenever concerns arise prior to or during clinical experiences. In the event that stress or anxiety creates concern for either a student or CI, counseling services are identified, either through the University of Puget Sound or the rehabilitation facility. Furthermore, the DCE is available to assist in order to insure a successful clinical experience. Successful candidates should possess excellent communication skills and commitment to collaboration with colleagues, both within and outside of the University. Specific teaching responsibilities will be determined in coordination with the program director, and include a commitment to evidence-based instruction and integration of appropriate technology. Successful candidates will understand contemporary issues in professional education, to include knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting didactic and clinical education, students, and the profession of physical therapy.
Candidates must have an earned doctorate degree, a minimum of 3 years in clinical practice, a minimum of 2 years in clinical education [e.g. DCE, SCCE, CI, and be eligible for PT licensure in Washington. Preference will be given to individuals with an academic doctorate, American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties certification, experience as a DCE or SCCE, completion of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Credentialed Instructor Program Level 1 (Level 2 preferred), and experience with competency-based education. Faculty responsibilities will include teaching in the core curriculum, scholarship, student advisement, and service to the University, profession, and community.

The School of Physical Therapy at the University of Puget Sound is a highly regarded program established in 1975 and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), with continuing accreditation confirmed in 2019. The program has eight full-time faculty members, five adjunct faculty, and a robust network of clinical instructors that mentor students in the on-site clinic, Puget Sound’s pro bono physical therapy service to the community. This part-time clinical experience is integrated into students’ second and third years, and is in addition to the program’s two, full-time clinical experiences.
