Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley Extension, the continuing education division of the University of California, Berkeley, has been building bridges between UC Berkeley and the public since 1891. UC Berkeley Extension serves the professional and continuing education goals of thousands of people each year.

Extension's programs are an essential part of the University mission to: extend the research and scholarship of UC Berkeley to a global community; increase access to higher education for non-traditional, online and international students; and improve the workforce.

Responsibilities
  • Applying professional student services concepts, provides the full range of student services tostudents in cohort programs.
  • Academic Advising: Advises instructors on university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and instructors on requirements for program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with partnerships manager, program directors and the assistant dean.
  • Recruitment and Admissions: May participate in outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; utilizing in-depth knowledge of the organization's admissions criteria, helps rank applicants for admissions; evaluates domestic and international transcripts for program eligibility.
  • Student Conduct: Responsible for interpreting organization policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
  • Events: Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as Orientation and Graduation events.
  • Course scheduling: In collaboration with the partnerships manager and program directors, schedule course sections for cohort programs. Assists with instructor hiring processes as needed.
  • Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the organization, or academic strategies and enrichment programs.
  • Using information learned from student and instructor interactions, makes recommendations for improvements to the program curriculum, course elements, or internal processes related to program execution.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility/authorization for international students and scholars.

Other Information

This is a full-time, 1-year renewable contract position. Eligible for full UC Benefits.
