Job Description:


Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)


Salary: Commensurate with experience


This position reports to the Associate Director of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) within the International Education and Global Affairs (IEGA) department. This role works to ensure the university's compliance with the federal regulations that govern international students and exchange visitors, including visiting scholars, applying highly specialized knowledge of immigration regulations and academic policies and procedures. This professional will work as a member of various teams (immigration and insurance advising; front desk; SEVIS; IT; ISSS; IEGA; etc.) to plan, coordinate, and implement programmatic endeavors for the university community as a whole; collaborating with ISSS team members and university partners, as assigned, to further the mission and vision of the office. The international student advisor will work as a member of a fast-paced team, responsible for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) regulatory compliance, while maintaining the integrity of all relevant systems on campus.


Additional components of the position include:


  • Advising international students and scholars in person, virtually, and via email;
  • Serving as a forward-thinking team member who articulates departmental immigration policies and procedures;
  • Liaising with state and federal agencies including, yet not limited to, the SEVP, SSA, and DMV;
  • Making informed and independent decisions about eligibility for immigration benefits, balancing policy, precedent, and customer service;
  • Staffing programmatic functions hosted by the ISSS and collaborative university offices;
  • Presenting at orientations and informational workshops, on-campus and at conferences, as assigned; and
  • Representing the ISSS/Binghamton University at professional meetings, within and outside of SUNY.

The candidate will function as a Designated School Official and an Alternate Responsible Officer as recognized by the US Department of Homeland Security and US Department of State, respectively, while also serving as a department liaison to administrative units across campus and in the community.



Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Significant experience understanding, interpreting, and applying federal immigration laws and regulations
  • Demonstrated experience in exercising discretion and independent judgment in making informed decisions in complex situations
  • Experience working with complex organizational processes and procedures
  • Demonstrated aptitude for learning, interpreting, and disseminating highly technical information, regulations, and procedures
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience working effectively with cross-cultural communication
  • Ability to identify objectives, plan and implement programs/activities to meet these objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to provide advising and presentations
  • Ability to interact with a diverse population of university and community stakeholders
  • Ability to work well under pressure and balance competing priorities with frequent interruptions
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Suite and Google services
  • Demonstrated proficiency in usage of SEVIS real-time interface
  • Note: Per federal regulations, applicant must be able to demonstrate US citizenship or lawful permanent residency. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position

Preferred:


  • Master's degree
  • Experience using SUNPSIS and/or BANNER software, and previous DSO and ARO credentials in SEVIS

History

Binghamton University opened its doors as Triple Cities College in 1946, to serve the needs of local veterans returning from service in World War II. Originally located in Endicott, N.Y., five miles west of the present campus, the fledgling school was a branch of Syracuse University.

Four years later, the college was incorporated into the State University of New York (SUNY) and renamed Harpur College in honor of Robert Harpur, a Colonial teacher, patriot and pioneer who helped settle the area west of Binghamton.

In 1961, the campus moved across the Susquehanna River to Vestal. Growing enrollment and a reputation for excellence soon led to the selection of Harpur College as one of four doctorate-granting University Centers in the SUNY system.

In 1965, the campus was formally designated the State University of New York at Binghamton, and in 1992, Binghamton University was adopted as our informal name.
