Departmental Overview


UC Berkeley's Information Technology (bIT) department is powered by problem solvers who deliver the technology services and support that enable students, faculty, and staff to do their best work.

Jenn Stringer, our Associate Vice Chancellor for IT and CIO, is responsible for the strategic oversight of both the bIT department and the broader campus-wide Information Technology (IT) strategy. This includes leading the strategic planning effort for campus IT priorities. Dedicated bIT staff partner with other IT departments across campus to provide technical support and services for students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This collaborative campus community of ~900 staff is known as One IT

  • Applies applications programming concepts in designing, developing, modifying, debugging and evaluating complex APIs for functional areas that are sustainable and meet customization standards.
  • Responsible for providing analysis for complex existing programs and works to formulate logic for new systems/functionalities, devise logical procedures, prepare flowcharting, perform coding, data analysis, and test/debug programs, dealing directly with central departments and campus consumer system owners.
  • Develops test cases for complex solutions designs, performs performance and integration testing.
  • Develops and executes moderately complex test plans.
  • Works with partner groups that support API infrastructure, database and other technical infrastructure to support environment upgrades, changes and additions.
  • Ensures development and services support future web application upgrades and API replatforming needs.
  • Involve and support major application enhancement / upgrade / implementation projects.
  • Develops test plans and system implementation plans.
  • Prepares and obtains approval of system and programming documentation.
  • Initiates and recommends changes in development, maintenance and system standards.
  • Understands industry practices and department policies and procedures relating to work assignments.
  • Ensures that System Development Life Cycle and change management procedures are followed and documented to support each system development and change requests.
  • Provides consultation and training on enhancing and expanding campus HR APIs to technical staff and functional users.
  • Engages in professional development and training activities that are relevant to this job description.

Required Qualifications
    Hands-on experience in designing and developing high volume web services in or ability to learn Java using API Protocols and Data Formats (REST, JSON, SOAP & XML). Experience in or ability to learn Java development. Experience with or ability to learn Java frameworks & technologies like Fuse, Spring, Junit, Mockito, JDBC. Experience with or ability to learn design principles and best practices in implementing REST APIs. Work with or ability to learn continuous integration tools like Jenkins and Bamboo to automate dev, build, deployment and testing. Java development to implement service transformation, routing, enrichment and orchestration. Writing or ability to learn Junit test cases to validate the code quality and code coverage. Experience with or ability to learn BDD & Test Driven Development. Experience with or ability to learn test automation & reporting tools. Experience with or ability to learn API documentation tools like Swagger. Experience with or ability to learn framework-based development languages like Ruby on Rails. Knowledge of or ability to learn Cloud infrastructure (AWS/Azure/GCP). Knowledge of or ability to learn Docker container deployment. Knowledge of or ability to learn Microservices architecture. Experience in or ability to learn publishing as well consuming of Web Services, REST Services. Understanding of or ability to learn Agile/Scrum principles. Knowledge of or ability to learn SDLC. Experience in or ability to learn SQL. Effective conflict resolution and strong communication skills. The ability to work effectively with a diverse group of employees. Ability to lead within a diverse environment. Welcomes differing skills, outlooks, and experiences of others working toward shared goals. Someone with a sense of urgency with good time management skills

    Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
    Preferred experience in PL/SQL. Preferred experience with PostgreSQL + NoSQL databases. Preferred experience with Atlassian tools like JIRA, Confluence, and etc.

Salary & Benefits
