The Colleges of Chemistry (CoC) and Engineering (CoE) at UC Berkeley are recognized for their educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top one to three Science and Engineering programs in the United States and the world. The combined Colleges have close to 300 regular faculty members, 2,000 graduate students and 3,500 undergraduate students located in nine academic departments. The College of Chemistry and College of Engineering prepares scientists and engineers with the multidisciplinary skills to lead enterprises of all scales, in industry, government and the nonprofit sector.
The professional Master of Molecular Science and Software Engineering (MSSE) graduate program within the College of Chemistry and in collaboration with the College of Engineering, prepares post-baccalaureate students for career paths that lead to software positions and managerial and executive positions in software technology enabled companies and organizations as well as entrepreneurial ventures. The program combines leadership coursework in innovation, teamwork and management with intensive study in an area of technical specialization of software engineering tied to large scale scientific computing, data science, and advanced algorithms. The Executive Director will report to the Senior Assistant Dean of Business Development and Operations in the College of Chemistry with a strong reporting responsibility to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry.
The responsibilities of the MSSE Executive Director include the management and marketing of a significant, independent academic or research program; personnel management and coaching; execution of all strategic planning endeavors; program development and coordination; academic affairs; course approval, implementation and refreshment; program administration; and budget matters.
- Curriculum Development and Instructional Management
- Oversees and ensures completion of all aspects of course approval, implementation and periodic course refreshments.
- Works closely with faculty and chair to facilitate curriculum planning.
- Works on course design and implementation and obtains approval by the ladder faculty.
- Identifies faculty or lecturers to prepare and deliver courses.
- Identifies viable and cost-effective online curriculum delivery.
- Collaborates with academia and industry to define capstone projects with software engineering relevance.
- Makes recommendations and implements decisions on operational and budget processes, programmatic staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning that have programwide impact.
- Strategizes revenue generation opportunities and monitors revenue for programs.
- Adjusts staffing levels and activities as needed to stay on budget.
- Coordinates with campus and UCOP units to complete or renew required academic reviews, tuition and financial aid proposals, and accreditation documents.
- Directs decision support data collection and analyses.
- Assesses program's effectiveness to make changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly, including, tuition, gifts and endowments, new philanthropy, corporate support and executive education.
- Oversees recruitment and admissions, leads marketing efforts, and leads student admission committees.
- Serves on committees representing the program, participating in short- and long-term planning.
- Makes executive level decisions about all personnel actions in conjunction with HR partner, including recruitments and creation of new positions.
- Manages and coaches program staff, including completing quarterly Achieve Together check-ins, morale and team building programming, and strategies to retain high performing staff.
- Academic background and experience in selected area of research involving computational science or software-related fields.
- Advanced knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
- Advanced oral and written communication skills.
- Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
- Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students to achieve results.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.

- Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and/or equivalent training or experience.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $125,000-$150,000 (grade 25).
