Requirements

Research Scientist, Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging -Georgetown University Medical Center

The Center for Functional and Molecular Imaging (CFMI) at Georgetown University Medical Center has substantial expertise in structural, functional and brain imaging. We combine brain imaging with behavioral methods to explore the neural mechanisms of emotion, thought, feeling, movement and perception.

Job Overview

The Research Scientist for CFMI has a leadership position with three principal components: a) operating the 3.0T MRI scanner including developing new imaging protocols and adjusting sequence parameters to meet investigators' needs; 2) implementing and conducting advanced statistical analyses including hierarchical regression and multi-voxel pattern analyses of the research studies underway in the lab; and 3) managing all of the junior research technicians (RT3s).

The primary responsibilities of the scanning component include running the 3.0T MRI scanner; ensuring the safety of those being scanned; working with investigators to develop advanced protocols; assisting in the execution of their neuroimaging experiments; managing data transfer; providing help and support such as technological troubleshooting; and performing analysis and quality control of data collected for various projects. The responsibilities related to statistical analysis of ongoing research studies include primary responsibility for data organization, processing, analysis, and assisting with data interpretation including manuscript preparation. The Research Scientist employs strong technical skills to implement quality control procedures and set up a real-time fMRI statistical analysis system; and instructs graduate students who either rotate in the lab or as part of the data acquisition components of two graduate-level courses: NSCI-521 and NSIC-560.

The Research Scientist works with sensitive populations, including those with neurodevelopmental issues (e.g., autism), Alzheimer's disease patients, stroke patients, and children. When opportunities to troubleshoot technical laboratory instruments, they identify the problem and suggest expert solutions to the problem at hand.

Work Interactions

The success of the CFMI completely depends on the Research Scientist's ability to operate this complicated MRI scanner, working with researchers from other labs, assisting them when they encounter problems, and making sure the wide range of participants being scanned feel comfortable. Therefore, The Research Scientist mentors, schedules, and manages all of the junior Research Technicians IIIs, and provides support for 1-2 academic interns.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree
  • 3+ years of experience - consideration will be given to a combination of equivalent education and experience
  • A combination of highly technical and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent leadership, management and communication skills
  • Ability to properly configure MR spectroscopy experiments, and to correctly identify MRI acquisition tilts to optimally measure certain cerebral structures - such as but not limited to hippocampal, orbital frontal cortex, and olfactory bulb
  • A solid understanding of MRI physics and maintenance of the machine, as well as MRI spectroscopy
