The Department of Integrative Physiology encourages applications for a Professional Research Assistant in the Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory! Working with leaders in the field of cardiovascular aging, the primary purpose of this role is to coordinate a clinical research trial. Duties include recruitment, scheduling, assisting with and performing research procedures, sample collection and processing, and data collection, organization, and analysis.

At the Department of Integrative Physiology, we study organisms as functioning systems of molecules, cells, tissues, and organs. This emphasis on whole-body function, and its applications to human health and disease, has made Integrative Physiology the largest undergraduate major at CU-Boulder. Our Ph.D. program was recently ranked 9th out of 63 physiology programs in the country. Our diverse faculty includes several who have joint affiliations with the Institute for Behavioral Genetics and the Center for Neuroscience, as well as clinical divisions at the CU-Anschutz medical campus.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Clinical Duties:

Subject Recruitment

  • Help with timely and effective recruitment of human subjects for laboratory research projects (e.g., developing new recruitment resources, advertising, performing online and telephone screening, assessing whether subjects meet inclusion/exclusion criteria, etc.)
  • Help ensure recruitment is culturally diverse and contributes to an expansive campus environment. This includes recruitment that is welcoming to all candidates, especially those that are historically underrepresented.

Obtaining Informed Consent

  • Thoroughly explain all experimental procedures to potential human subjects in a way that is easy to understand.
  • Have sufficient understanding of the laboratory research project to be able to answer participant questions.
  • Obtain oral and written informed consent in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with revision of informed consent documents and other regulatory documents as needed.

Scheduling Experimental Testing Sessions

  • Schedule subjects for check-in visits and testing sessions.
  • Coordinate schedule with general research center and investigators.
  • Make reminder calls and send reminder emails to participants.

Screening, Monitoring, and Testing Research Subjects

  • Prepare subject folders; prepare equipment and supplies for scheduled procedures.
  • Assist investigator with laboratory procedures (e.g., exercise testing, DXA, blood pressure measurements, ultrasound imaging, etc.)
  • Monitor subject compliance using online survey records.

Data Management and Subject Results

  • Analysis of computer-recorded physiological data (e.g., ECG, BP waveforms, physical activity monitors, etc.)
  • Assist with management of database (timely data entry into REDCap/spreadsheets, assure data are properly recorded in files and in computer databases, compile data for interim and final study analyses).
  • Management of collected biological samples (ensuring samples were collected and stored appropriately, inventorying, compiling samples for later analyses as needed).
  • Follow-up with collected biological samples sent to core laboratories.
  • File organization; develop packets of subject results and send to subjects in a timely manner.
  • Complete paperwork for subject payment and follow-up to ensure payment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and REDCap.

Wetlab Duties

  • Processing of blood samples for testing.

The salary for this position is $38,000-$46,000 annually.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a Biologic Science.

  • Ability to prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under strict time constraints.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to build excellent rapport with human research subjects.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Experience with clinical research (preferred) or other interactions with patients in a clinical setting.
  • Experience with scheduling subjects, patients, or other.
  • Experience in a wet lab setting.
