Educational and Experience Requirement:

High school graduate or G.E.D. equivalent and completion of a Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) program with an approved school of nursing. Currently licensed as a LVN with the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners. One year experience in a clinic or hospital setting, or related experience.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Performs responsible professional Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) work according to standard procedures prescribed by the SHSU Physicians Clinic. Cares and treats patients according to accepted nursing and medical standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

Performs preliminary screening to determine patients’ primary complaints. Maintains patient and staff confidentiality in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. Provides assistance and care for sick and injured patients by administering routine injections, tests, and procedures according to the treating practitioner’s orders. Prepares and assists the treating practitioner with physical examinations and minor procedures when necessary. Supervises nursing staff. Maintains supplies, equipment, and drugs as necessary. Maintains exam rooms between patient screenings. Records all pertinent information concerning care and medication in patient electronic health records. Will be expected to perform chronic care management for patients on a routine basis. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Must be extremely accurate in following written and oral instructions regarding patient care. Must be able to communicate effectively with outside medical facilities, other university departments, rotating students, student doctors and residents. Must be proficient in administering IV fluids and performing phlebotomy. Must be familiar with and able to maintain infection control standards as set out in Universal Precautions protocols. Alertness and careful attention is required to prevent injury to self or others. Must have a positive attitude toward change, professional growth, and teamwork. Must have proficient computer skills. Must work efficiently due to busy schedules. Must work within the scope of license and continue education as required. Work schedules may vary as required by the clinic. Experience coordinating clinical research would be beneficial.
