Position Type: Full-Time Faculty

Education Level: Master's

Travel Percentage: None

Job Category: Education

The Oglethorpe University Physics Program is seeking applicants for a one-year visiting position beginning Fall 2022. Applicants must be able to teach introductory algebra-based physics for the life sciences as well as the associated labs. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop and offer an intermediate or upper-level elective course depending on area of expertise.

Responsibilities include full-time teaching in the program, which is housed in the Division of Natural Sciences. A full teaching load for this position will be three courses in fall and four in spring; a course is defined as one four-credit-hour lecture or two one-credit hour lab courses. There is no research expectation. The hire will have access to professional growth funds for membership dues to professional organizations, travel to regional conferences, purchase of software, and other approved expenditures. Additional funds are available by application to support activities such as speaking at conferences or attending workshops. Qualified candidates will demonstrate a commitment to teaching from a liberal arts perspective, stressing oral and written communication skills as well as interdisciplinarity within the sciences.

Oglethorpe University is a small and growing liberal arts institution. Dedication to students and quality teaching are highly valued here. Our campus is located in the urban environment of Brookhaven, Georgia, with easy access to the cultural offerings of Atlanta and its surrounding cities (e.g., about 15 minutes to the Midtown Arts District via the MARTA rail system).

The university currently enrolls a diverse population of nearly 1,500 students who represent more than 30 states and 30 countries. More than half of Oglethorpes students identify as persons of color and 40 percent are the first in their families to attend college. Candidates from historically excluded groups, whose work furthers the institutions diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, and who bring varied life experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

Oglethorpe is committed to fostering a campus community and intellectual environment that recruits and maintains diverse faculty and staff, promotes a culture of respect for diverse experiences and perspectives, and understands and addresses the role of inequality in shaping our individual and collective identities. We value faculty mentorship and support faculty teaching, research, and development through the Office of the Provost which works closely with the Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Qualifications

M.S. or Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field. A record of prior successful experience as a teacher and laboratory instructor is desirable.

To Apply

Applicants are asked to submit a brief letter of interest (which should speak to a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion), curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, and the name and contact information of two references (no letter necessary at this point). We will begin reviewing applications on March 28th and will accept them until the position is filled.

Organization

Founded in 1835, Oglethorpe University is Atlanta’s only co-educational small private college, home to more than 1350 eclectic and engaged students from 33 states and 31 countries.

Renowned for the groundbreaking Oglethorpe Core, Oglethorpe's academically rigorous programs emphasize intellectual curiosity, individual attention, close collaboration among faculty and students, and active learning in relevant field experiences. Students connect theory and practice with the help of Oglethorpe’s A_LAB (Atlanta Laboratory for Learning), an incubator for experiential learning through internships, study abroad, civic engagement, and undergraduate research.

Oglethorpe is in an unprecedented era of growth and innovation, evidenced by increased enrollment and philanthropic giving, and new strategic entrepreneurial partnerships and programs. In 2018, Oglethorpe launched Flagship 50, a groundbreaking merit tuition scholarship program that matches all 50 states’ flagship tuition for qualified students. The 2020 Fiske Guide to Colleges named Oglethorpe one of only 20 “Best Buy Schools” in the nation and the only one in Georgia for the third year in a row.

This year marks the opening of the I.W. “Ike” Cousins Center for Science and Innovation and the Q. William Hammack, Jr. School of Business. Oglethorpe received a $50 million gift commitment, the largest in its history, from alumnus Bill Hammack ’73 to establish the new school of business.

In the past five years, Oglethorpe has seen the addition of an award-winning campus center; a residential complex with six state-of-the-art classrooms; and the expansion of arts and athletics facilities. Oglethorpe’s study abroad venture with LeadAbroad has expanded its global footprint, with the development of five global campuses in Barcelona, Cape Town, Greece, Paris, and Rome.

Oglethorpe is home to the Conant Performing Arts Center, Oglethorpe University Museum of Art, and the Piedmont School of Atlanta. The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels compete in the NCAA Division III Southern Athletic Association.

Location

Oglethorpe is ideally located in the newly-formed city of Brookhaven, an inner suburb of Atlanta recently cited as the safest city in the metro area and one of the most popular destinations for singles and families alike. The campus is situated on Atlanta’s famous Peachtree Road, less than a mile from the Brookhaven-Oglethorpe University MARTA station and easily accessed from all major interstates. The university is just minutes from Atlanta’s best shopping and dining.
