University Housing’s mission is to provide comfortable, affordable and secure on-campus housing options in residential communities where the academic success and personal growth of residents are encouraged and supported. University Housing operates as a self-supporting auxiliary unit within the Division of Student Affairs. More than 8,000 students live on campus, where University Housing manages more than 2.8 million square feet of space in 22 residence halls, 20 apartment buildings, four Greek Park houses and 18 buildings on UGA’s nearby Health Sciences Campus. The department employs more than 700 staff members to conduct the operations of a comprehensive and integrated student housing organization.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on-the-job training. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Position Summary:

The primary function of this position is the installation, maintenance, and repair, or replacement, of electrical equipment, fixtures, components, and associated circuitry in the low voltage to line voltage range, to include both AC and DC.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

1. Working knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
2. Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, as well as local and state electrical codes.
3. Understands and follows oral and written instructions.
4. Sufficient English language proficiency needed to read official UGA communication and English verbal communication skills needed to effectively communicate with supervisors, staff and residents.
5. Ability to understand electric circuit diagrams, blueprints, and equipment manuals and use same to troubleshoot systems, makes repairs, and installs new components.
6. Ability to do inspections of 7.ll areas of the residence halls, and other buildings, which may include climbing ladders, crawling in utility tunnels, attics, pipe chases and mechanical areas.
7. Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with staff, residents and various customer groups, also demonstrates supportive involvement in work environment.
8. Proven ability to work as a team member, but also make effective independent decisions and follow through on assignments.
9. Ability to efficiently utilize a variety of computer applications in the completion of assigned tasks, including but not limited to the work order system, OneSource payroll system, Microsoft Office Suite, UGA email and employee websites.

2. Bend at the waist and knees.
3. Work with arms and hands overhead for an extended period.
4. Use, care and maintain hand tools and power tools.

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Test, locate, and troubleshoot, electrical circuits, components, and equipment. Repair circuitry and repair, or replace, components and/or equipment to bring to operational status. All repairs are to be made to code specifications. Troubleshoots problems with control systems and related components.
2. Installs new circuits, outlets, wall switches, equipment and other associated components in the low voltage to line voltage range. All installations will be done to existing code specifications.
3. Installs and repairs light fixtures within the residence halls, including but limited to exterior locations no higher than 20 feet.
4. Performs routine and recurring preventative maintenance on electrical systems.
5. Responds to written and verbal, as well as computerized work order requests in a timely manner. Utilizes and manipulates the web based work order system to document work.

1. Knowledge of electrical systems for area of responsibility and ability to make repairs when necessary.
2. Aware of all updates within the latest edition of National Electrical Code and comply in daily performance. Translate and interpret information to other staff, when necessary.
3. Safely operate and use various tools associated with the electrical trade, e.g. electric diagnostic test equipment and other tools of the trade.
4. Carries out work assignments with expected degree of independence and efficiency to completion according to electrical practice with limited callbacks for additional repair.
5. Keep all work areas clean. Remove trash and debris associated with day to day tasks in immediate shop area.
6. Keep shop area inventoried, stocked and well organized so that supplies can be easily located by other staff members.
7. Knowledge of workplace rules and guidelines and stay in compliance with UGA policies and procedures.
8. Effectively communicates and collaborates in a professional and consistent manner with a variety of individuals such as, building service workers, residence hall staff, students and families and other maintenance team members via departmental radio, telephone or in person.
