Bard College at Simon's RockDirector of Communications and MarketingEmployer Website: http://apply.interfolio.com/103551
Our Institution: Founded in 1860, Bard College is an international network of highly innovative and admired educational institutions grounded in the liberal arts and sciences. A division of Bard located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Bard College at Simon’s Rock is the only four-year college in the U.S. specifically designed for motivated adolescents to fully realize their academic potential by beginning college immediately after the 10th or 11th grade. BA and AA degrees are granted in over 35 areas of study. Simon’s Rock attracts a diverse student population of approximately 400 students, drawn nationally and internationally, with a significant population of students identifying as LGBTQIA2S+.

For over 50 years, Simon’s Rock has practiced the simple yet radical idea that many students are ready for college before the age of 18, an idea that launched the Early College movement in the United States and beyond. In 2015, Simon’s Rock launched Bard Academy, a two-year high school program for boarding and day students, with courses designed and taught by college professors and leading to entry into college after the tenth grade. In doing so, Simon’s Rock has connected high school and college in one cohesive, coherent six-year arc. In 2019, Simon’s Rock established the Early College Research Institute (ECRI), a locus for research into “what’s next” in Early College.

The Role: At Bard Academy and Bard College at Simon’s Rock, we seek a dynamic and creative Director of Communications and Marketing to lead all external and internal communications. The Director will design and implement integrated communications and marketing strategies to attract a vibrant student population, as well as supporting on-going fundraising initiatives and executive communications. The Director, under the general direction of the Vice Provost, leads a team responsible for shaping communications content, including but not limited to the materials related to admissions, fundraising, academic program and policy descriptions, and general campus communications spanning all channels (e.g., announcements, newsletters, print and digital collateral, website).

The Director is a key member of the Provost’s senior leadership team, which works collaboratively to serve and strengthen all aspects of the Simon’s Rock community, and the successful candidate’s vision will contribute to strategic decision-making. The Director will work across departments to identify compelling content opportunities, and to design and carry out projects which advance the reputation and external profile of Simon’s Rock. The Director, both mission-driven and data-driven, will develop and implement effective marketing strategies, and regularly analyze and evaluate those strategies and results with the intention of honing, adapting, and improving them.

The Director oversees staff members and manages external contractors as needed to provide a unified communications capability. The Director must efficiently extract maximum impact and value from the available budget. The Communications department is a collaborative space, and the successful candidate will be a highly adaptive “player/coach” who inspires the group to do their best work while also being willing to lead by example, directly driving key tasks when necessary.

Required:

Undergraduate Degrees

Bard offers courses of study in four divisions—Arts; Languages and Literature; Science, Mathematics, and Computing; and Social Studies—and in interdivisional programs and concentrations. Students may also earn a five-year B.S./B.A. degree in economics and finance. Bard and its affiliated institutions also grant the following undergraduate degrees: A.A. at Bard High School Early College; A.A. and B.A. at Bard College at Simon’s Rock: The Early College; and through the Bard Prison Initiative at six correctional institutions in New York State.

Graduate Degrees

More than 200 students are seeking graduate degrees: M.A. in curatorial studies, M.Music in vocal arts, conducting, and curatorial, critical, and performance studies, and M.S. in environmental policy, climate science and policy, and economic theory and policy at the Annandale campus; M.F.A. and M.A.T. at multiple campuses; M.B.A. in Sustainability in New York City; and M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in the decorative arts, design history, and material culture at the Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan. Early Colleges

Bard's early colleges educate the next generation of thought leaders, preparing them to be lifetime learners. Bard High School Early Colleges in New York City, Newark, New Jersey, and Cleveland, Ohio; Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts; and Bard Early College New Orleans and Bard Early College at the Harlem Children's Zone Promise Academy all serve the needs of highly motivated younger students.

International Degrees

Internationally, Bard confers dual B.A. degrees at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, St. Petersburg State University, Russia (Smolny College); American University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan; and Bard College Berlin: A Liberal Arts University; as well as dual B.A. and M.A.T. degrees at Al-Quds University in the West Bank.

Cultural Life

Campus life in Annandale is vibrant, with world-class performing arts venues; continuous and varied student activities; and numerous cultural and recreational opportunities in the surrounding historic Hudson River Valley and in New York City. Students choose from more than a hundred active clubs on campus, and new clubs begin every semester. The Bard College athletic teams are the Raptors. The College’s colors are red and white. The critically acclaimed Bard Music Festival is presented on campus each summer, exploring the life and work of a single composer through chamber music, choral and orchestral performances, symposia, panel discussions, and preconcert talks. Since 2003 the festival has been part of Bard SummerScape, which annually presents operas, films, and theatrical productions that complement the festival’s theme.

Outstanding Faculty

Bard's undergraduate faculty-to-student ratio is 1:10 and courses are taught by full faculty members. Among the many distinguished faculty at Bard College are five MacArthur Fellows—poets John Ashbery and Ann Lauterbach, novelist and memoirist Norman Manea, painter and multimedia artist Judy Pfaff, and journalist Mark Danner. Other notable faculty members include soprano Dawn Upshaw, journalist Ian Buruma, composers Joan Tower and George Tsontakis, poet Robert Kelly, and writers Luc Sante and Francine Prose. Over the years, four recipients of the Nobel Prize in Literature have taught at Bard—Saul Bellow, Isaac Bashevis Singer, José Saramago, and Orhan Pamuk.
