Director of Missionary Disciples Institute

Job Description:

As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks a Director of the Missionary Disciples Institute to provide collaborative leadership to prepare high school age students to grow as missionary disciples in service to their communities through the Church.
The minister will be deeply rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition, and from that tradition, engage the Missionary Disciples Institute participants and constituents through radical hospitality, a welcoming attitude, and intentional outreach. The ideal candidate will be joy-filled, creative, highly organized, and seek out new opportunities and collaboration. Missionary disciples should see the university minister as a Christian witness, leader, and mentor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.

  • Administration and Recruitment: Design, develop, and implement the Missionary Disciples Institute (60%) including:
  1. Develop and implement a recruitment strategy to attain 75 High School students to participate in MDI for SU2022.
  2. Communicate and collaborate with Marian University faculty, staff, administration, students, and Lilly Endowment, Inc. representatives (as needed)
  3. Identify and hire dynamic keynotes, faculty, young professionals, college mentors, and house band.
  4. Evaluate the Institute yearly through surveys and reports to be shared with stakeholders.
  5. Create post-Institute opportunities for student engagement including assisting in SDS recruitment and the transition of MDI participants to SDS.
  • Formation: Design and implement the formation and training program for the MDI MU Mentors and assist in the formation of the San Damiano Scholars including (30% of responsibilities):
  1. Pre-institute gatherings during spring semester for the college mentors
  2. Pre-institute week-long retreat and training with the college mentors
  3. Contribute to the monthly formation meetings
  4. Participate in the bi-annual retreats
  5. Engage in the formation of house leaders
  6. Oversee a class of scholars including one-on-one mentoring
  • Additional responsibilities and other duties as assigned (10% of responsibilities)

  • Baptized, practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church
  • Master’s degree in ministry, theology, or equivalent (or a plan to pursue this education)
  • Experience in campus ministry or related field
  • Experience supporting students from a variety of cultural, socio-economic, and faith backgrounds
  • Experience working with university and/or high school students and providing leadership formation opportunities to them.
  • Familiar with the rich heritage of the Catholic intellectual tradition including Vatican II documents, Evangelii Gaudium, Renewing the Vision, and Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
  • Strong attention to detail

  • Experience in budget management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Regular travel, frequent evenings, and occasional overnights

  • Fluent in social media and digital communication platforms
  • Knowledge of the Franciscan charism and tradition
  • Grant writing experience
  • More than five years of experience in ministry
  • Competency in Spanish
